A Spartan Alumnus making us proud!

For Rick Henfling & #8217;06, taking flight is more than a metaphor & #8212; it& #8217;s a career trajectory.

Class of '76....this is a teaser post for you! I am doing my best to scan a yearbook to bring back some memories. The binding on the book is holding on, but I don't want to push it too much. Old bindings and flatbed scanners don't get along. Some of the pages are discolored, so I am trying to do some color correction as well. This will take some time, as you had 272 PAGES in your book! Here are the first 20+ and I will continue to post as I clean them up. My goal is to be done by the 50th reunion (not sure when it is) or at least by the anniversary of the class of 1976!
PS - I have no control over the order of the pics once Facebook takes them. I may try to make a shareable folder when the time comes that everyone can access if they would like.

The year was 1985:
The Indians finished 60-102.
A rookie named Bernie Kosar led the Browns to an 8-8 record, winning them the AFC Central.
The Cavs were battling the Indians for the most pathetic team in Cleveland.
A huge snowstorm was a week late for finals. It was significant enough that it made the yearbook.
January 22 reached -19 degrees and had a windchill of -60, but the kids still walked to school…uphill…both ways.
A pipe broke in the graphic arts room and the mall also suffered some damage.
Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman to run in the presidential election.
Big Boy needed to be replaced? A look-alike contest was held with a year's supply of burgers as the trophy.
A smoking lounge was proposed for students. (I am going to leave this one alone)
A Battle of the Classes was held and the Seniors won. The seniors claim to have won the tug-of-war competition as they “ruthlessly dragged the Juniors across the gym.”
There was a Powder Puff game. It was important enough to have shirts. The kids these days don’t even know what that is. The game…they know what shirts are.
Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen, but wearing shirts from his solo career was still okay.
Some guy named Lance had a lot of rules. “When given an open book test you forget your book.” “When given a take-home test you forget where you live.”
A double bill of “The Real Inspector Hound” and “An Actors Nightmare” were performed.
The Non Club was formed and convinced the geese to migrate to RHHS. They are still here. Thanks.
Tim DeVito refrained from commenting about the Non Club.
A saw xylophone was developed. What were they teaching you? Sounds dangerous…can we give it a try?
The quality of the wrestling team remained, but the quantity diminished. Perhaps the fitting issue with the singlets was the issue.

Speaking of singlets (nice transition), the wrestling team is back and hosting its first meet in...a long time! If you are around and have some free time, please join us at the new building and cheer on our wrestlers. The event is Thursday, December 19th. Alumni will be recognized at 6:30 and the competition will begin at 7:00. Patrick Hopkins, a wonderful and supportive alum, is planning a gathering at Firehouse in Willoughby after the matches. Join us and recognize your peers, our past, and then relive the glory days at Firehouse!

The year was 1975:
Lack of sidewalks showed that Richmond Heights was still rural.
The mall was open and allowed shopping opportunities.
Richmond Place condominiums opened.
Runway expansion caused more air traffic and noise.
Szuhy Sunoco was a place to get your car serviced.
Richfield Coliseum was completed.
Greg Allman played at Cleveland Public Hall.
The school had a marching band.
The sophomore class had 132 students and now had to take health.
"One pound overweight, run" was the battle cry of coach Papouras.
Some things have changed and some things have stayed the same. Wrestling, the once proud tradition of Richmond Heights High School, has been missing for a long time, but it is making a comeback and will be hosting an alumni night and meet on Thursday, December 19th, at 6:30. If you are an alumni or live in the community, we ask that you come and support the rebirth of this program. Most of our wrestlers don't have much experience, but they do have heart. Having a packed house would be a great way to encourage our athletes as they rebuild the Spartan Tradition.

More posts will be made to keep everyone in the loop. Thanks to the 1975 yearbook for all of the pics and information!

I have always wanted to document the history of this district using yearbooks, but there are challenges. The first challenge is time. I have 4 classes to prep and I don’t have the time to scan images the way I used to. The second is the age of the yearbooks. The bindings are not always in good shape, especially on the yearbooks from the 60s and 70s. I am trying to preserve the books that I have and scanning them isn’t easy. I took these pics with a phone to see how they came out, but I will experiment more as I move on. My goal is to scan the books from 65, 75, 85, and 95 since their anniversaries are coming up. I can’t promise that I will finish before the end of the year, but I will do my best to post these memories.

"Here in Richmond? I didn't know they still had a team.”
Coach Grande: “Yeah. We've got uniforms and everything. It's really great."

Spring is in the air and baseball is near! For those of you who did not know, the Spartans have been fielding a team for a few years and the program is slowly growing. Unfortunately, some of our equipment is getting old and the players are asking for donations via a fundraiser. If you would like to make a small donation, please click on the link and help out the team. Any amount is appreciated as we try to bring various sports back to Richmond Heights!

Spartan wrestling is back and Mr. Alcantar is trying to build the program from the ground up. He has a rich history in wrestling and has been able to secure several donations, including some mats to use for training. Restarting a program is never easy and finances are always needed, so please consider making a donation to help secure the future of this program!
