As you explore the park, keep an eye on the marshes along the Ogeechee River. Fiddler crabs can be seen scurrying across the mud by the hundreds, waving their oversized claws. These tiny creatures play an important role in the coastal ecosystem, helping to keep the marsh healthy!

It's not a Cardinal..........or is it?

Did you know the Northern Cardinal is not the only "red" bird that can be seen at Fort McAllister?

The Summer Tanager also makes its home here during the warmer months. This neotropical migrant species migrates from Central and South America each spring to breed and nest here in Georgia.

As it's name suggest, it was once classified as a Tanager species. Recently however, it has been re-classified as a true Cardinal! This major taxonomic shift took place in 2009 after years of field study and DNA analysis. Ornithologist discovered that the birds natural history and habits, along with its DNA, were much closer to the Cardinal family than true Tanagers.

Summer tanagers, like their cousins, the Northern Cardinal, are extremely sexually dimorphic. Meaning the males and females are strikingly different as far as plumage coloration goes. Males are bright red, with hints of pink and orange, while females are more olive green and yellow.

These birds eat primarily insects, but can be attracted to certain fruits and berries. They also love a clean fresh water source!

This past week was Night Ranger Ryan Yearick's last with us. In addition to his security and guest duties, Ryan has over the years served as a tour guide, Civil War infantry and artillery, and even as Jolly Old St. Nick! He was just at home on an electrical box, as he was a musket. Ripping the cord on a cannon, or ripping the cord on a chainsaw. We will certainly miss his versatility and his professionalism, and his team first attitude.Ryan is moving into a role where he can spend more time enjoying his hobbies and his family. He does plan to continue as a park volunteer! We wish Mr. Yearick's all the best in his future endeavors!
