We have SERIOUS traffic safety problems in Richmond. Although I recognize the Richmond Parkway is a problem I also believe traffic safety nearest to where people live in our residential areas should come first, especially where there is equal or greater need due to the number of collisions and fatalities in these areas.

I strongly opposed allocating ALL of the $2M to improve the Richmond Parkway alone. I asked if we could at least divide these funds and spend $1M on the Parkway to address the hazardous intersection and or striping and then direct the remaining $1M to residential streets with similar high collision and fatality rates.

4-3 council members voted to move the item as is WITHOUT allocating any funds to residential traffic safety improvements.

This kind of vote is pretty frustrating, budgets and funding allocations express values.

“Richmond green-lights improvements to one street. Some say it’s the wrong one

In a 4-3 vote, the city council allocated $2 million for Richmond Parkway work, but some council members say residential streets with known safety hazards are being left out.”

Richmond City Council OKs work via a split vote, with some council members opposed due to how funds are being prioritized.
