πMarch is Womenβs History Month, and here at the Richmond Fire Department, we are proud to recognize two outstanding members of our teamβLt./Medic Kelsey Long and FF/EMT Grace Townsend.
Lt. Long has made history as the first woman to hold the rank of Lieutenant within the Richmond Fire Department. Her leadership, dedication, and commitment to the fire service continue to pave the way for future generations of women in our department.
FF/EMT Grace Townsend represents the strength, compassion, and professionalism that women bring to the fire service every day. Through her hard work and service to our community, she exemplifies what it means to wear the uniform with pride.
Lt. Long - I am originally from Eaton, Ohio and I am married with a 15 year old son. I never really considered being a firefighter up until I was in paramedic school and started doing my clinicals with RFD. During that time, I became intrigued just watching the day-to-day activities and trainings that take place at the firehouse and seeing some of the fire runs they were going on. I also enjoyed the camaraderie and the brotherhood. At some point I felt that I could really see myself doing both Fire and EMS, so I went for it. Ten years later, I still feel like I made the right decision getting into this line of work.
FF/EMT Townsend - I was born and raised in Richmond, IN. I graduated in 2020 at Reinhardt University, majored in Criminal Justice and played softball and lacrosse. I've coached softball and volleyball at Richmond High School. I am a proud military spouse, avid runner, roller derby skater, and teach softball lessons in my free time. I came back to Richmond to serve the community that raised me. I get to be at RFD because of the females that came before me to pave the way for future generations. I hope this encourages young women to have the confidence to join any male dominated career; we just have to work a little harder and reach a little further.
We are grateful to have these women serving our community and honored to recognize their contributions during Womenβs History Month. Your impact reaches far beyond the station walls, inspiring others to follow in your footsteps. ππͺπ©βππ©βπ
