VA250 - American Revolution 250 Commission

VA250 - American Revolution 250 Commission Virginia’s semiquincentennial is not simply about our past. How we commemorate our founding also impacts our present and our future.

The official account of the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250), established to commemorate Virginia's role in the 250th anniversary of American independence. ✏️ Sign up for our newsletter https://va250.org/newsletter/ Established in 2020 to commemorate Virginia’s role in the 250th anniversary of American independence, the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission (VA250) aims to

form a more perfect union by educating Virginians about their history and civic duty and sharing diverse narratives that capture Virginia’s complete story and role in shaping the nation. This is why the Virginia 250 Commission has chosen “To Form a More Perfect Union” as our theme. Our founders knew there was more work required two hundred and fifty years ago, and work remains to be done. Our overarching goals are:

to educate Virginians, including our students, about our history, our founding ideals and our system of government;
to engage every community and all regions in events that tell a complete story; and
to inspire Virginians to commit to American citizenship.

“Virginia’s History is America’s Story” is more than a tagline on marketing collateral. Virginia has always been the crucible of our nation, from our founding to the present day. The first colonists arrived in Virginia. The first encounters with indigenous peoples occurred here. The first ships carrying the enslaved landed here. The first representative government was formed here. The famous speeches, critical debates and major events that led to the movement for independence and sparked a revolution happened here. The Fincastle Resolutions, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were all written by Virginians. Because of the leadership role Virginia has always played in our nation, VA250 leads the nation in the commemoration of our semiquincentennial.

, 250 years ago, the Declaration of Rights was adopted unanimously by the Fifth Virginia Convention in Williamsburg. Written by Virginian George Mason, it declared the inherent rights of Virginians and defined government as “instituted for the common benefit, protection, and security” of the people. In its 16 sections, the document established principles such as the separation of powers, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.

This document was one of the first to emphasize these ideas and it would go on to influence major founding documents of the United States that you may have heard of such as the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.

250 years ago, on June 11, 1776, five delegates were tasked with drafting a document that would define a nation.

Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston began the work of putting independence into words.

What followed was not just a declaration, but a framework for how a nation would understand liberty, rights, and self-governance.

For International Archives Day and an important VA250 anniversary for the Virginia Declaration of Rights this week, we’re highlighting the Library’s collection of George Mason Papers, 1775-1789. This collection contains correspondence, drafts of amendments, bills, declarations and petitions demonstrating the work of Mason during the Virginia Conventions and his time in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Of interest is a 1778 copy, by Mason, of the Virginia Declaration of Rights; a draft bill for the establishment of a Land Office; and material related to the Mount Vernon Convention, which, among other things, established navigation rights of shared waterways between Maryland and Virginia. Shown is a 1785 letter from Mason to Benjamin Harrison.

View the collection online at https://lva.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/collectionDiscovery?vid=01LVA_INST:01LVA&collectionId=81165110010005756&lang=en&_gl=1*b7o66d*_ga*NjQ2NDgxMTIyLjE3NTU4NzkzMTA.*_ga_R0237QHE6G*czE3ODA5NDg5MjYkbzk2JGcxJHQxNzgwOTQ5MDM3JGo1NiRsMCRoMA.
