On 2/19 at 12:37 PM, Richmond Fire was called for an outside fire on Sportsman Rd at Sunshine Lake.

While en route, Richmond Fire units were advised by 911 dispatch that fire was nearing several structures. Upon arrival, fire crews found six structures involved in fire and about eight other structures immediately threatened by fire.

Mutual aid was requested and fire suppression efforts were started. The Ray County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol moved residents out of the area. As additional units arrived crews protected uninvolved structures, worked to extinguish involved structures and pressed back on the fire line.

The combination of structures, brush and trees and the dry windy conditions caused an extended time of 23 total hours on scene. Richmond Fire received mutual aid from Lexington, Carrollton, Excelsior Springs, Hardin, Lawson, Wood Heights, Orrick, Wellington/Napoleon, Higginsville, and Norborne Fire Departments as well as Ray County Ambulance District, Evergy and the Salvation Army providing assistance on scene. Richmond Fire appreciates all of the help we received.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There’s a challenge going around the metro between local fire and EMS agencies of whom has the best looking Christmas spirit. Lawson Fire and Rescue put us up to the challenge and we decided to take time away from helping Santa to prep for visiting Richmond and the surrounding areas to join in the fun.

We know challenge Orrick Fire Protection District, Hardin Fire Protection District, and Lexington Fire and Rescue may try to compete but good luck!

The Richmond Fire Department will be conducting tests on the fire hydrants in the city starting today, October 20th. The main purpose of these tests is to ensure that fire hydrants are in good working order before they may be needed in an emergency.

Fire hydrant testing is conducted by the fire department each year. Each hydrant in the city will be tested for proper flow and adequate mechanical operation. Hydrants that are found to be inadequate will be scheduled for repair or replacement, as the specific defects warrant.

During this time, residents may notice irregularities in the water. Air bubbles or discoloration may appear briefly when hydrants near a home are flowed. These conditions should clear up quickly, and the water will be safe at all times during the testing.
