“REHOMED FOR SUCCESS!”
Rehoming a dog is never easy, especially when that dog has become a part of your family. However, acknowledging that your dog has potential that far exceeds what you see in front of you…turns the sometimes heart wrenching act of rehoming a dog into a selfless act of love and service to one’s community.
That was exactly the case in early October of 2022 when Dan & Wendy Delli, of Versailles, Kentucky, reached out to a family friend, Mr. Scott Decker of Madison County, and asked for help with rehoming their son’s year and a half old Belgian Malinois – Daisey. Dan & Wendy Delli’s son, Matt, is a military veteran and had always dreamed of owning a Belgian Malinois. Mr. Decker reached out to Madison County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Derek Thomas about Daisey and shortly thereafter, Daisey joined our agency and awaited handler assignment.
In early 2023, Deputy Roy Johnson earned the opportunity to become a K9 Handler and be partnered with Daisey, who was to begin training and certify as an Explosives Detection Dog (EDD), under the knowledgeable and experienced instruction of Master K9 Trainer, Retired KSP Trooper and then Madison County Sheriff’s Office K9 Handler & Deputy Martin Wesley.
Deputy Roy Johnson joined the Madison County Sheriff’s Office in March of 2018 after retiring from the Richmond Police Department in July of 2016; where he served 16 years as a Patrol Sergeant, 10 years attached to the Richmond Police Department’s Emergency Response Unit (ERU), and 8 years on their Bike Patrol Unit. Even while serving at the Richmond Police Department, Deputy Roy Johnson remembers having a keen interest in Explosive & Bomb Technologies.
Deputy Roy Johnson & K9 Daisey began training and spent several weeks imprinting on over twenty explosive odors: ammonium nitrate, RDX, TATP, HMTD, TNT, PETN and many more.
In August of 2023, K9 Team Deputy R. Johnson & K9 Daisey earned their first of many Explosive Detection Dog certifications, by certifying with the NNDDA under the instruction of Master K9 Trainer Martin Wesley. In September of 2023, the K9 Team certified again as an Explosive Detection Dog Team through NAPCH: National Association of Professional Canine Handlers, under the instruction of world-renowned Master K9 Trainer Al Gill at the 2023 Bluegrass Trials in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.
Continuing with their upward momentum, the K9 Team certified in April of 2024 in explosives detection, tracking and article location through the NNDDA and under the instruction of Master K9 Trainer Martin Wesley.
As K9 Handlers, we are often asked about why we train with our K9 partners so much…for this specific K9 Team, Deputy Roy Johnson and K9 Daisey were preparing for the GOLD STAR of Explosives Detection…The National Odor Recognition Test (NORT). The NORT program is part of the ATF National Canine Division, which is responsible for training the canine teams at the ATF and other law enforcement agencies in explosives, fi****ms detection and related tactics. The ATF hosts only 12 NORT certifications nationwide, each year, to accommodate an estimated 500 explosives detection canine teams.
In early June of 2024, Deputy Roy Johnson & EDD K9 Daisey traveled to Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas to train on various tactical activities. The three-day test, and earned certification, allows K9 teams to showcase their odor detection and teamwork skills while actively searching out and identifying a variety of explosive compounds, ignitable liquids and gun powder-related residue.
The NORT certification is a critical benchmark for Explosive Detection Dog Teams and symbolizes the proficiency standard used for highly effective Explosive Detection Dog teams across the country, according to the ATF.
On Thursday June 27th, 2024, Deputy Roy Johnson & K9 Daisey, along with Lt. Derek Thomas, had the opportunity to meet with Dan & Wendy Delli at White Hall State Historic Site. Dan & Wendy were overjoyed with Daisey’s successes while serving her community at the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and look forward to seeing her grow to her full potential in her new home here in Madison County!
“Deputy R. Johnson and EDD K9 Daisey have been deployed on multiple occasions for explosive detection prevention and school clearance. This part of our K9 Program cannot be measured to our community. The safety of our community is a top priority but especially our children. We are very proud to have a resource which provides security for Madison Countians in any and every way!” Major Tony Terry - Madison County Sheriff’s Office
