Aging With PRIDE!

According to a survey conducted by AARP, more than 80% of older le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, and q***r (LGBTQ) individuals expressed concerns about not having enough social support systems as they age. Across all subsegments of the LGBTQ community, people report being more isolated, less financially secure, and often without the same level of familial support as others who are not part of the q***r community may have.

Caregivers across the board often sacrifice their own health and quality of life for the sake of their loved ones. Most LGBTQ caregivers report feeling they had no choice in taking on their caregiver role, often with the person needing their care not accepting their identity, which creates additional strain on the caregiver’s wellbeing.

Despite all the obstacles, the LGBTQ community remains resilient, and many still report leading satisfying lives, especially when they have a support network to lean on. Stable and supportive relationships among partners, friends, and chosen family not only make people happy overall, but contribute to one’s general wellbeing.

Today, The Span Center joins our community in a moment of reflection.

Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend; it is a solemn tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their courage secured the freedoms we enjoy today, and their legacy remains an enduring part of our national story.

TELEBRIDGES

Friendly phone calls for older adults

Stay connected with regular phone calls from a friendly volunteer. TeleBridges matches older adults with volunteers for scheduled calls. These calls provide a listening ear, kind conversation, and reassurance that someone cares and will be checking in on a regular basis. Many older adults experience loneliness due to health challenges, separation from loved ones, or loss, which can adversely impact physical and mental well-being. TeleBridges offers comfort and reassurance with weekly calls, giving participants a listening ear and friendly
support.

Participants are matched with volunteers who build rapport and trust over time, creating meaningful connections that make a difference.

FRIENDSHIP CAFÉS

Imagine a place right in your
neighborhood where the lunch is
always healthy, the activities are
always fresh, and the company is
always familiar. That place is the
Friendship Café.

Designed for adults aged 60+, cafés
are vibrant community hubs where "staying active" looks like a morning of creative arts, a lively exercise session, or a guest lecture that sparks a new interest.

With 20 locations across Richmond
and the surrounding counties, there
is almost certainly a café just around the corner from you.

Each site is also overseen by qualified Nutrition Managers who ensure every meal meets daily dietary needs and each day is filled with fun activities.

The best part? It’s all provided at no
cost. From the warm meals and
fitness classes to the organized
field trips and creative workshops,
your seat at the table is already
waiting for you.

Most locations are open from 9:30am to 1:00 pm, four days a week. We’ve got the food and the fun—all we’re missing is you.

Ready to find your local spot? Visit
The Span Center online or call us
today to find the café nearest you.

We can’t wait to see you there!
