The Virginia Senate will be voting on SJ272, introduced by Senator Mamie E. Locke, very soon. SJ272 is a Virginia Constitutional amendment that guarantees the right to vote of all Virginians who satisfy US citizenship, age, and residency requirements. It disregards all other factors including felony convictions and will therefore end the concept of felony disenfranchisement. The Virginia State Conference NAACP has described SJ272 as their highest legislative priority for this year. The Virginia ACLU also supports passage of this amendment. Felony disenfranchisement was designed from the start in the era of Jim Crow to interfere with the right to vote of Black people in Virginia.
