A Love Your Block In-Kind Sponsorship was awarded to the Urban Forest Advisory Committee to help beautify Lucas Park. A 50โ€™ by 50โ€™ space is being converted from a w**dy patch of grass into a beautiful native plant garden. A volunteer gardening party was held on March 2, 2024 in which volunteers pulled w**ds, replenished the space with soil and mulch, and planted plants through the Love Your Block In-Kind Sponsorship.

The garden is being transformed into a little oasis filled with colorful annuals and perennials. All the plants planted are California natives, and are adapted to the local climate, support water conservation, and help clean the air and soil. The plants will also support Richmond's populations of birds, bees, and butterflies. The new garden will allow people to spend more time in the park with the community. We thank all volunteers who help make our public spaces beautiful!

The Love Your Block In-Kind Sponsorship Program is a funded partnership between the Community Services Department and the City Manager's Office, Economic Development. The LYB In-Kind Sponsorship Program provides in-kind supplies to projects that improve environmental quality with the engagement of resident volunteers to clean-up and beautify Richmond. There is $10,000 available each fiscal year and sponsorships can be up to a maximum of $1,000 for supplies. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with a deadline of May 31st, 2024 for projects or events that will be completed on or before June 30th, 2024, and a deadline of May 31, 2025 for projects or events that will be completed on or before June 30th, 2025. Looking to brighten your block? Apply for a Love Your Block Mini-Grant today!

In 2017, Richmond residents Patricia and Raynard sought to repurpose a section of Parchester Park into a childrenโ€™s edible garden. They prepared the grassy area by w**ding and mulching alongside children from the neighborhood. With participants from the Parchester after-school program and community members, they built 4 planter boxes and 4 picnic tables. To truly make it an edible garden for children, participants were asked what seeds and trees they wanted to grow. Later on, Patricia and Raynard hosted an open house to plant vegetable seeds and seedlings, mulch area around planter boxes, and handprint planter boxes with paint. Today, the garden is known as the Mary โ€œPeaceโ€ Head Memorial Garden!
