SparkPoint Contra Costa

SparkPoint Contra Costa Our mission is to partner with agencies to empower individuals and families to become financially sustainable and advocates for social change.

Created by United Way of the Bay Area, SparkPoint Centers are financial education centers that help individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet. We help our clients address immediate financial crises, get them back on their feet, and build financially secure futures. Our one-stop centers bring together a full range of services, and we encourage clients to take advantage of two or

more at a time. By combining services, SparkPoint clients reach their financial goals faster. Every SparkPoint client gets a coach who helps create a step-by-step plan to set and achieve personal financial goals - from getting out of debt, to going back to school, or finding a job. We know that lasting changes do not happen overnight. Therefore, SparkPoint commits to working with our clients for as long as it takes to achieve their goals - for many, that is two or three years.

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day: A Call to Action

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man whose vision of justice, equality, and love continues to inspire us. Dr. King taught us that change is possible when we come together. He challenged us to stand against injustice and fight for a better future for everyone.

At RCF Connects, his dream fuels our mission to build healthy, thriving, and equitable communities. We know the road ahead is not easy. With challenges already rising under the New U.S. Administration, the fight for equity and justice becomes even more critical. Anticipated policies and decisions at the national level may threaten the very principles of fairness and opportunity that Dr. King dedicated his life to.

Dr. King once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” These words remind us that now is the time to act boldly, think creatively, and work together. RCF will remain steadfast in this commitment.

We believe in the power of connection—of people coming together to address problems and build solutions that lift everyone. By partnering with community members, local governments, and organizations, we can create systems that are free from racism, bias, and discrimination. We are committed to building a world where everyone belongs, has access to opportunities, and can reach their full potential.

Dr. King also reminded us that, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” That is why we cannot ignore the struggles our neighbors face. We must listen to their voices, amplify their needs, and center their solutions. Together, we can ensure that all communities have the resources and support they need to thrive.

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let us honor his legacy with action. Let us challenge systems that uphold inequality. Let’s endeavor to replace them with systems built on equity and justice. Let us stand united in the face of adversity, proving that connection and collaboration are stronger than division and fear.

Together, we can transform Dr. King’s dream into reality—a society where everyone has the power to thrive.

In observance of this day, all RCF Connects offices are closed.

Sparkpoint Contra Costa and RCF Connects wish you a happy observance of Juneteenth.

At RCF Connects, we believe deeply in the idea that "we are only free when everyone is free." Under our mission of Convening, Facilitating, and Funding, we are committed to building a more just and equitable society. What does that look like in action? It means actively challenging and disrupting racist, biased, and discriminatory practices and policies. It means amplifying the voices of our community to drive meaningful change from the ground up.

As we observe Juneteenth, let's reflect on the progress we've made and recommit ourselves to the work that lies ahead. Together, we can create a future where freedom and justice are truly accessible to all. Happy Juneteenth from all of us at RCF Connects—here's to celebrating freedom and building a brighter tomorrow, hand in hand.

Wishing all our clients a restful weekend during the observance of this day of honor.

While many celebrate Memorial Day as the long weekend that unofficially calls in the beginning of Summer, it is important to understand the real origins of this important day. For in fact, this day comes from a place of equity and social justice.

In May 1865, thousands of formerly enslaved Black community members in Charleston held a ceremony and parade at the site of a former racetrack, the Washington Race Course and Jockey Club, where a reported 260 Union soldiers were buried in a mass grave. They reburied the soldiers in individual graves, decorated the resting places, sang songs of freedom, and held a picnic afterward.

“The war was over, and Decoration Day had been founded by African Americans in a ritual of remembrance and consecration,” said Dr. David Blight, Sterling Professor of History and of African American Studies at Yale University, in his article “The First Decoration Day,” about the Charleston celebration. “The war, they had boldly announced, had been all about the triumph of their emancipation.

This holiday was not official until 1968. Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1968, with the passing of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act by Congress in June 1968, which went into effect in 1971.

Memorial Day is frequently commemorated with the gesture of American flags lowered to half-mast, accompanied by a moment of silence observed at 3:00 p.m., a time designated by The National Moment of Remembrance Act, passed in 2000.
