Too many men wait until something becomes severe before finally getting checked! Regular screenings and honest conversations can save lives, especially within the Black community where conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and untreated mental health struggles often go overlooked.

Depression does not always look like sadness. Sometimes it looks like anger, isolation, exhaustion, shutting down emotionally or constantly staying busy to avoid dealing with life internally. Mental and physical health are deeply connected and both deserve attention.

Check. Don’t guess.

Introducing Our New Alzheimer's Resource

MINDFUL MATTERS: A Conversation Guide for Faith Communities on Alzheimer's Disease

African Americans account for nearly 20% of those living with Alzheimer's disease, yet we ONLY represent approximately 2-5% of clinical trial participants in Alzheimer's trials. The Balm In Gilead and our partner Bristol Myer Squibb are working to change that.

Download this new resource and learn more about what you can do to lower your risk and find clinical trials in your area! Click this link: brainhealthcenterforafricanamericans.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Final-Balm-Alzheimers-Conversation-Guide-v1.pdf

“What advice do you give moms who are emotionally drained trying to help an adult child experiencing manic episodes?”

During the 2025 Healthy Churches 2030 Virtual Conference session, Mothers Advocating For Their Child’s Mental Health, parental caregiver of an adult child with a diagnosed mental illness Tanya Simmons Reid shares a real and powerful reminder: “Safety first… if you’re not well, you’re not going to be able to help someone else be well.”

Moderated by Neesha Stringfellow, Executive Director of HeartLife Ministries and Recovery 180, this conversation was for every mother carrying more than people realize.

If you registered to attend last year’s conference, the full session is available on-demand through May 31 at midnight EST. All you have to do is login to the platform. Visit HC2030.org, click ‘Login’ and enter your email address.

Stroke is a leading cause of death among African American women, who are more likely to die from a stroke than non-Hispanic White women or Hispanic women in the United States. African American people have the highest rate of death due to stroke among all racial and ethnic groups.

- Almost 3 in 5 African American women are diagnosed with high blood pressure (greater than or equal to 130/80 mm Hg). This is a much higher proportion than White women (almost 2 in 5).
- African American women are diagnosed with higher rates of obesity (nearly 3 in 5) and diabetes (more than 1 in 8), conditions that increase the risk for stroke, than White women.

A Stroke Is Not A Joke. Learn the risks, know the signs! Visit cdc.gov.
