Congratulations to Jessica Nguyen and Ellie Sabalewski on receiving the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Award, a prestigious honor for graduate students pursuing research.

Both are biomedical engineering alumni of VCU College of Engineering who are continuing to advance research in healthcare. Jessica is pursuing her Ph.D. at Texas A&M University, where she studies mechanobiology, tissue engineering and biomaterials. Ellie is pursuing her Ph.D. at Rice University, researching macrophages that can recognize and kill ovarian cancer cells, with aspirations of becoming a professor and advancing solutions to critical women’s health challenges.

Jessica and Ellie credit their early research experiences at VCU for helping them discover their passions and shape their academic paths. We congratulate them on this outstanding achievement and wish them continued success in their research journeys.

A weeklong STEM camp in middle school sparked a passion that shaped Jade Rasberry’s future. From that moment on, the recent VCU College of Engineering biomedical engineering graduate knew she wanted to pursue a career in medical engineering.

Drawn to VCU for its close integration with the medical campus, Jade found opportunities far beyond the classroom. As president of the National Society of Black Engineers, she built community and leadership experience while making a lasting impact on campus. She also turned personal experience into purpose through her Capstone project, earning first place in the biomedical section.

Arthrofibrosis is a common and debilitating effect after joint surgery or traumatic injury, caused by the body’s healing response producing excessive scar tissue. There is currently no way to predict who will develop it or effectively treat it once it occurs.

Rather than treating arthrofibrosis after it develops, what if it could be prevented? Barbara D. Boyan, professor at VCU College of Engineering and executive director of the Institute for Engineering and Medicine at VCU, is taking that approach. Her research focuses on intervening at the onset of inflammation during surgery using an anti-inflammatory gel designed to stop the condition before it starts.
