Virginia needs thousands of volunteers to make every election run smoothly.

Pollworkers are the backbone of Virginia's election process.

It starts with a smile and a hello when you arrive to vote. Poll workers welcome voters to the polling location, verify voter registration, confirm the voter's eligibility, ensure ballots are properly processed and hand out "I Voted" stickers.

It takes approximately 15,000 poll workers each year to keep the voting process safe and secure.

I was honored to attend another veterans listening session this week in Clifton Forge, this one with several Vietnam and Gulf War vets. Joe Wood said all 15 members of his unit got prostate cancer. Of DOGE cuts impacting the Salem VA, he said: “when doctors leave, they don’t replace ‘em.” Referrals to specialists now take many months, including another vet who was told he had ALS and had to wait an excruciating year to see a specialist and learn he didn’t have it. Two remember being directly sprayed with Agent Orange, and it felt good because the spray was cool in the heat of the jungle. “They never told you any information” about the dangers, Wood said, choking up. “If one of ours got killed, we had to stop speaking their name.” Our veterans deserve so much more than slashing their benefits and privatization of their healthcare. They served; they earned.
