UPDATE: Two Chesterfield police officers remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition after they were shot during a domestic disturbance.

"This is one of your worst nightmares as a chief of police, and it’s one of those things where I’m so grateful that they are alive, and that the men and women at Chippenham Hospital have done an amazing job to keep them alive and doing the work that needs to be done to ensure a successful recovery," Chesterfield police chief Col. Prayers for our Brothers and Sisters in Chesterfield County.

Update at 12:45 a.m. June 1

Chesterfield County Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

At about 4:40 p.m. on May 31, police responded to a reported shooting in the 12900 block of Gumfork Place. The adult female complainant said an adult male, who is known to her, had fired shots inside the residence during a domestic disturbance. The woman reported she was now in an upstairs bedroom, and the suspect was trying to get into the room.

Uniformed officers entered the residence and the suspect, who was armed with a long gun, fired multiple shots at them. Two officers and a police canine were shot; the officers and the police canine were transported to area medical facilities. The officers remain hospitalized in critical but stable conditions. The police canine died as a result of his injuries.

The suspect was also injured in the incident and was transported to an area hospital. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information should contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660 or through the P3 app.

Chesterfield County Police are on scene on Gumfork Place where two CCPD officers and a police canine were injured while responding to a shooting call this afternoon. The officers have been transported to area hospitals for treatment. The suspect was also injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment. There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time.

Horrific news out of Carroll County (VA), Deputy Logan Utt was shot and killed, murdered in cold blood on a welfare check call.

The dirtbag who shot Deputy Utt fled the scene like a coward and is still at large.

Please keep Deputy Utt’s family, friends, co workers in your thoughts and prayers as the grief is unimaginable.

RIP hero…we will take it from here.

Let’s share this and find the scumbag who killed Carroll County Sheriffs Deputy Logan Utt. Let everyone please lift up the Utt family during this time of loss.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial held a DC sniper exhibit displaying artifacts recovered by law enforcement. They also payed respects to those who lost their lives to the snipers. The National Law Enforcement Officers Museum is an excellent nut place to visit when you come to DC.
