Woodland Cemetery Volunteers Woodland Cemetery, located in East Highland Park, is the final resting place for many of Richmond’s notable African Americans.

Since 2018, Woodland Cemetery Volunteers have been working weekly to restore Woodland to its intended beauty.

We had a beautiful (albeit hot and humid) day to work at Woodland. We had 11 volunteers, including 2 regulars, 6 returning, and 3 brand new. We probed for a few hours, and we found several large rocks and a very large concrete object. We lifted about 30 previously-found markers, trimmed a few trees, and cleaned the marker for a visitor’s grandmother. Thank you to everyone who came out today!

It was a beautiful day at Woodland! The clouds kept us cool, and we welcomed a light sprinkle when things got hot. We had 2 regulars, 2 returning volunteers, and several visitors stopping by to see the newly paved roads.

Some days we probe for hours and find only baked potato-sized rocks and random pieces of concrete. Today, however, we finished uncovering one marker found yesterday, and then we found 7 additional markers!!

Only half of the markers that we found were on our official “to find” list, so there are still many more markers out there to be found. Thank you to everyone who came out today!

It was another warm and very muggy Saturday morning at Woodland Cemetery for the 15 University of Richmond School of Law students and faculty volunteers along with 2 regulars. In spite of the humidity, the students got several tasks done including removing weeds from the Veterans Memorial, moving gravel off the asphalt where it had washed recently in heavy rains, removed grass clippings and overgrowth on many gravestones, moved a cut up fallen tree and looked for buried gravestones. They found 3 new gravestones along with re-finding a few gravestones that had been found before but had gotten completely overgrown. They also cleared off the name plates on several plot sills. On a very warm and muggy morning, 4 VCU School of Medicine students returned to help us some more at Woodland. Since it was so warm, we stayed in the shade and looked for buried gravestones. We did lots of probing and ended up finding 2 gravestones. We also had 3 regulars who mowed and ran trimmers. Our thanks to everyone who came out this morning to help.

There were also 4 folks who attended the walking tour of Woodland which occurs once each month.

Saturday August 22nd will be our 2nd annual Preserving the Stories of Woodland Cemetery event at The Springs Recreation Center!! In addition to the tireless work of reclaiming the cemetery from factors like nature and littering, we also want to document your stories! We would love to record your oral history relating to this sacred space and family interred there, time spent working there or anything else! We are also looking for any ephemera related to the cemetery (burial paperwork, obituaries, photos, etc) for our archives and will have a scanner on site to help preserve that as well! The oral history aspect is registration only so please contact us for that and don’t hesitate to message if you have any questions. Thank you and please spread the word!

It was a quiet, cloudy morning at Woodland. One regular volunteer trimmed evergreen branches that were over the road, cut poison ivy, cleaned English ivy from a stump (that will take a chainsaw to remove), and removed a few rotten stumps. Just when it was time to switch to probing, the rain started. Luckily the tools and I made it into the container before it started pouring. We’ll have to save probing for another day.

It was a muggy morning at Woodland for 2 regulars and a first time volunteer. We spent most of the morning mowing and trimming. While taking a break from mowing and trimming, we found a new gravestone after seeing a corner washed off by recent rains. We also installed a new metal grave marker. It was a beautiful day to work at Woodland! The sky was clear, and the temperature was comfortable. We had 2 regular volunteers who probed for covered markers and lifted previously-found markers to prevent them from disappearing again. We found 3 1/2 markers (one for a woman who died 90 years ago today!), some pottery, and a missing piece of a sill, and I lost count of how many markers we lifted. Please join us to help uncover and lift more markers!
