Today, we kicked off our very first Coffee with a Cop of 2025 at Cafe McBryde! Community members had the chance to chat, ask questions, and connect with Chief French, the RPD command staff, City Manager Shasa Curl, and Councilmember Jamelia Brown. Everyone enjoyed some delicious coffee and freshly baked cookies courtesy of Cafe McBryde while getting to know one another. Arrest made in a hit-and-run collision with a pedestrian.

This morning at 4:35 am, officers responded to a vehicle vs pedestrian collision on Valley View Rd at Morningside Dr. Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian who had injuries from being struck by a vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived.

The pedestrian suffered significant injuries and was transported to a local trauma center for treatment. Although their injuries were severe, they are expected to recover.

RPD Traffic investigators responded and located video footage of a possible suspect vehicle but could not read the license plate. Officers turned to information from a nearby Flock license plate reader and quickly developed information on the suspect vehicle. Using this information, they identified and arrested the driver this evening. The driver admitted to being involved in a collision.

Without access to the license plate information captured by Flock, they would not have been able to quickly identify and locate the suspect vehicle. Thanks to Flock, we could make an arrest in this case and find justice for this victim!

Congratulations, Detective Marecek, our 2024 Detective of the Year!

Tonight, we gathered to recognize Detective Karel Marecek at the Richmond Elks Lodge #1251 Law Enforcement Night to Honor Local Heroes.

Detective Marecek was chosen by his peers to receive the honor of being the Detective of the Year for 2024. Since starting at RPD in 2017, Karel has shown meticulous attention to detail and outstanding investigative skills. Most notably, Det. Marecek conducted a year-long investigation into an embezzlement case at a local business, resulting in a 10-year prison sentence for the suspect and financial restitution to the victims. He also leveraged his knowledge of combing forensic data, interviewing witnesses, and conducting surveillance while investigating a home invasion robbery. His hard work resulted in both suspects being arrested and receiving nine-year prison sentences.

Det. Marecek’s commitment to serving the Richmond community, his dedication to solving complex cases, and his ability to collaborate with multiple departments make him worthy of having the title of 2024 Detective of the Year!

Arrested for 211 (Robbery) on 2/11!

Yesterday morning, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred. The victim reported they were walking down the street when they were accosted by a subject who was armed with a handgun who demanded all of her belongings. The victim complied, and the suspect fled toward a nearby residence.

Officers responded and quickly located a probable location for the suspect. A short time later, they were able to identify the suspect and take him into custody without incident. Wouldn’t you know it, the suspect still had the victim's property on him when he was arrested! A subsequent search of where the suspect was hiding resulted in a firearm and brass knuckles being located. The suspect was also determined to be a convicted felon who can’t legally possess a firearm.

The suspect was transported and booked for PC 211 - Armed robbery (along with other charges), with his arrest date being 2/11! Good teamwork by all that responded, and we are glad that we recovered the victim's property, that they were unharmed, and that we could get another illegally possessed firearm off our city’s streets.

IN REMEMBRANCE

Today, we honor and remember Richmond Police Officer Augustine “Gus” Vegas - a 15-year veteran officer who was killed while intervening in a violent domestic dispute within his own home. Officer Vegas paid the ultimate price by sacrificing his life to protect his family from harm on February 11, 2016.

Officer Vegas was an accomplished and well-respected member of our organization. He worked as a patrol officer, a detective in the Property Crimes Unit, a detective in the Homicide Unit, and his last assignment was as a detective in the Regulatory Unit. Not only was he a hard worker, he was a compassionate family man with a huge heart. Gus left behind his wife of 22 years, 10 children, and 20 grandchildren; he was 58 years old.

Officer Augustine "Gus" Vegas, thank you for your friendship and dedicated service to our community. You are greatly missed.

Update to officer-involved shooting.

Yesterday, members of the Richmond Police Department were involved in an officer-involved shooting while trying to arrest a subject with a felony domestic violence warrant. The subject refused to submit to arrest, and a standoff ensued. During the standoff, the suspect wielded an object that appeared to be a knife. The subject ignored multiple commands to drop the object. Despite our officer's efforts to defuse the situation and end the standoff peacefully, the suspect charged the officers with the object in his hand while raising it in a threatening manner. This resulted in an officer-involved shooting occurring. We later determined the object was not a knife. The black knife sheath in the photo is the object the subject wielded, which investigators recovered at the scene.

Under the requirements of AB 1506, we recognized the California Department of Justice (DOJ) treats this as an “unarmed” officer-involved fatal incident, and we immediately notified them. The DOJ dispatched investigators to the scene to investigate.

We are fully cooperating with the DOJ’s independent investigation, and a link to their announcement is below.

We believe it is important to release information in a transparent manner. We intend to release additional information as soon as the investigation allows.

Officer Involved Shooting.

On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 8:13 p.m., officers from the Richmond Police Department responded to the 2700 block of Maine Ave in an attempt to locate a wanted subject. The subject was wanted on a probation violation warrant related to domestic violence charges.

Officers located the wanted subject on the Union Pacific Railroad right of way just west of the 300 block of Carlson Blvd. The subject refused to cooperate with officers, and a standoff ensued. Officers spent approximately 32 minutes attempting to de-escalate the situation and reach a peaceful resolution. At approximately 8:53 p.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred, and the wanted subject sustained fatal injuries.

The Contra Costa Law Enforcement Involved Fatal Protocol, a set of guidelines and procedures followed in cases of officer-involved fatalities, was invoked, and the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office responded to investigate.

Investigators are currently on the scene, and the investigation is in its early stages. We are committed to a thorough, transparent investigation. As more information becomes available, we will post updated press releases on the Richmond Police Department website:

Shooting leaves dog injured and officers scrambling to find her help.

Early yesterday morning, officers responded to a report of a shooting. Officers responded and located a member of our unhoused community who reported hearing a gunshot outside their tent. Thankfully, they were not struck, but they discovered their dog, Hennessey, had been hit by the apparent gunfire. Officers tried to comfort Hennessey the best they could, but it was evident she needed medical help and fast. She had an apparent gunshot wound to her stomach area. Despite her injuries, she remained sweet and affectionate to all the officers trying to help her, especially bonding with Officer Grivetti.

Officers quickly called several emergency vets but ran into roadblocks, with none able to help without the ability to pay. Finally, they found the Pet Emergency & Specialty Center of Marin. Although they weren’t located in our city or even our county, they were willing to offer treatment and probable surgery for poor Hennessey. They did this knowing Hennessey’s owner was unhoused and without the means to pay for the treatment.

Officers sprung into action, loading Hennessey and her owner into their patrol car, driving them straight to the Pet Emergency & Specialty Center of Marin for emergency treatment. Once there, the staff sprung into action immediately, treating Hennessey.

Officers stood by for several hours until Hennessey appeared stable. As of today, doctors said Hennessey is stable, and her prognosis looks good. Although we have the training and resources to provide first aid for people, we don’t for animals. In this challenging situation, we are incredibly thankful for the generosity of the Pet Emergency & Specialty Center of Marin for stepping up and helping an unhoused individual and Hennessey during their time of need. We would hate to think about what would have happened to poor Hennessey if they had not answered our call for help.

On Tuesday, officers were flagged down by someone who wanted to report information about a juvenile who was possibly being sexually assaulted. Officers learned the potential juvenile victim was possibly currently alone with their abuser. Officers immediately responded to the victim's location. On arrival, the alleged suspect answered the door wearing only a bath towel. Officers were able to locate and rescue the juvenile who was inside the residence.

Officers learned that the suspect was in the process of assaulting the victim when they arrived and that their knocking on the door had interrupted the assault. We are glad our officers were able to rescue the victim from their assailant and stop the assault from continuing.

The suspect was taken into custody and on Thursday charged with 16 felony counts related to the sexual abuse of a child 10 years old or younger. He remains in jail with a 7 million dollar bail. The victim has been reunited with their family and is receiving the care and resources they need.

Multiple arrest for drug sales made.

Over the past month, beat officers have focused their attention on street-level drug sales occurring on Macdonald Ave near 25th St. During this time, we have made five arrests and seized over 95 grams of co***ne base (crack co***ne), 27 ounces of promethazine, 20 grams of methamphetamine, 5 grams of powdered co***ne and several pounds of ma*****na all destined to be sold on our city’s streets.

We are unwavering in our mission to eliminate drugs from our streets and safeguard our community. We will relentlessly pursue these drug dealers until they are removed from our neighborhoods for good!
