Up next for our Women’s History Month spotlights: Cherry A. Evans, former director of public relations, aerospace education, marketing, economic development, aircraft licensing, and legislative affairs for the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV)!
Inducted into the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society Hall of Fame in 2023, Evans develops and implements a comprehensive plan to promote the Commonwealth’s air transportation system, increase aviation awareness, and support industry growth, while also overseeing strategic planning, budget development, air service improvement initiatives for air carrier airports, and more. Since joining the Department in 1989—after beginning full-time Commonwealth service in 1985—she has managed the agency’s public information network and served as its sole information contact until the Public Relations Division was created in 1994.
A Virginia Commonwealth University graduate, Evans previously worked with the Department of Planning and Budget, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the Virginia State Lottery. Her numerous recognitions include the Crystal Award for Excellence for the DOAV video “Virginia Aviation—Cleared for Takeoff,” a 1997 FAA award for contributions to Virginia aviation, and a recent Certificate of Appreciation from the Tuskegee Airmen Inc./Hampton University Aviation STEM Academy.
