This week, Richmond Fire Department is joining communities across the country in recognizing National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Throughout the weekend , Richmond will participate in Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters, illuminating City Hall in red as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude.

Behind every badge is a life of service, a family, and a legacy that will never be forgotten. Today and every day we remember the individuals who gave so much in service to our community.🚒

Congratulations to Battalion Chief Jamie Potter on an incredible performance at the Firefighter Challenge this past weekend🚒🔥

The Firefighter Challenge mirrors real-life fireground tasks from scaling 7 flights of stairs in full gear to hose drags and rescue carries.

She earned:
🥇 1st place relay team
🥇 1st place individual (40–45) + setting the Virginia state record!
🥉 3rd place tandem (only all-female team in coed division)

“None of these accomplishments are done alone, it takes support from the department, time to train, family and friends, and of course my two boys. It’s an honor to serve the community to the very best of my ability.”

Join us in wishing her continued success as she continues her training to prepare for the World Championship later this year!💪

Yesterday, Chief Segal and crews from Station 8 sat down with WRIC to talk about the importance of working smoke alarms after a recent house fire in the community.

What you may not know, just weeks before that fire, our crews installed smoke alarms in that very home.

Working smoke alarms provide early warning when seconds matter most!

Need smoke detectors or want yours checked? Call our Smoke Detector Hotline at 804-646-1526, our crews will come out and help.

A LOT goes into building a fire station, and even more into building one for the future! Major news Richmond! Fire Station 12 has been selected as a 2026 recipent for the American Public Works Association (APWA) Project of the Year!🏆

This is a huge milestone for RFD and a reflection of interdepartmental collaboration to build safer, more sustainable facilities. These efforts also helped Station 12 receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.👏♻️

Today, the Buddhist Monks made a stop at Station 17 for rest on their incredible Walk for Peace. We thought we were hosting them, but they hosted us instead—through food, fellowship, and a quiet reminder of what peace looks like when it’s lived. We are truly grateful for the community we serve and for the shared moments that remind us of the power of compassion and unity. 🤝🚒🕊️

⚠️Swipe right to see how quickly ice can become dangerous!!⚠️

Yesterday, RFD spent time removing dangerous ice from a downtown building ledge to reduce the risk to people walking below.

As temperatures change, ice on ledges, windows, gutters, and overhangs can break loose and fall without warning.

Walking outside or in the downtown area?
⛔️Stay away from building edges.
⬆️Look up before walking under ledges or overhangs.
👂Listen for cracking or sliding sounds, this could be signaling a snow load that has shifted!
🚶‍♀️Use covered walkways when possible.
📵Stick to salted or sanded paths and avoid distractions

Falling ice can cause serious injury. Stay alert, Richmond!

01/28/2026

Hey Richmond! Freezing temperatures means slick sidewalks, so let’s move smart! 🧊

If you’re heading out, slow it down and take short steps, keep your knees slightly bent, and use your arms for balance.

Choose footwear with good traction, watch for hidden ice, and use handrails when you can. A little extra caution goes a long way in preventing slips and falls.

Stay steady. Stay safe. And take your time!
