Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires, and space heaters are a big part of that. As cold weather approaches, remember:

📏 Keep space heaters 3 feet from anything that can burn.
🔌 Plug it directly into the wall. No extension cords!
😴 Turn it off when you leave or sleep.
🔎Check the cord for damage before using.

Somewhere right now, someone is scrolling through social media with a smoke alarm chirping in the background. Hi, this post is for you!👋🔋👀

Testing your smoke alarms is one of the simplest ways to protect your home. Press the test button monthly, change batteries when needed, and replace any alarm that’s more than 10 years old.

City residents in need of their smoke alarms checked or replaced should call RFD’s Smoke Detector Hotline at 804-646-1526, and one of our crews will come out to help.

🧒👦Who can enter: Kids ages 4-14
📆Contest runs: September 18-October 7
Draw it, paint it, color it, glue stuff to it. Parents or guardians should submit a photo of the artwork by either DM, emailing it to [email protected], or by mail to 1904 N. Hamilton Street, Richmond VA, 23230. Be sure to include the artist’s name, age, and a title for the piece.
🏆Winners: RFD will be choosing five pieces to hang in fire stations across the city, and those five artists will be invited in for a special fire station visit!

Today, we remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including the 441 first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the attacks.

We honor the courage and selflessness of those brave individuals who ran toward danger to protect others.

We remember their families and loved ones who continue to carry their loss.

Richmond Fire Department will never forget. 🇺🇸🚒

Retirement Announcement!! 🚨🐾

The Richmond Fire Department is honored to announce the retirement of our Arson K-9 Erny, after 6 years of dedicated service to the department and our community!

Alongside K-9 handler Brian Acors, Erny has supported countless fire-scene examinations, assisted investigators with the detection of ignitable-liquid residues, and represented the department with professionalism at public-education and community events.

Fire Investigator Brian Acors will soon begin the required training program to receive and certify with a successor Arson K-9. This process will help ensure continuity in our fire-investigation capabilities and maintain this important resource for the department.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Erny and Brian for their service, partnership, and commitment to fire safety. We wish Erny a well-earned, comfortable retirement and look forward to introducing the new K-9 team following completion of training and certification.🐾🚒🫡

Last month, the Richmond Fire Department had the honor of welcoming 3 new Fire Apparatus into its fleet with a tradition that has been passed down through generations of firefighters.

To all of our firefighters, thank you for showing up every day, answering the call, and keeping the City of Richmond safe.

And to our residents, thank you for your continued support that makes it all possible!🚒🏙️🔥
