The next meeting of Sleepy Hollow Garden Clun will be on October 20, 2023 in Price Hall at Epiphany Lutheran Church. The building will be open by 9 AM. The exhibit space will be ready by 9:15 AM. The meeting begins with refreshments at 10 AM, followed by a short business meeting and then the program. Mike Lockatell of "Roots and Blooms" will present a program on "Herbaceous Peonies for Today's Gardens". He will use slides as he shares what we need to know about planting and cultivating these marvelous plants. Bulbs will be available for purchase.

SHGC has changed our exhibit schedule to stage two seasonal exhibits - one in October and the second in March. The theme for October is "Fall Festival". The schedules for Design, Botanical Arts and Horticulture are found on pages 18 and 19 in the current handbook. All exhibits must be in place by 9:45 to facilitate judging.

The next meeting of Sleepy Hollow Garden Club will be on Friday, November 19 at Epiphany Lutheran Church beginning at 10 AM.. The program "Hummingbirds: Pint-Sized and Powerful" presented by Bob Schamerhorn, a noted nature photographer. Learn all about hummingbirds and creating a garden habitat to attract them. The Design Theme is "Magical Lights". Class 1: "Light Up the Holidays" an Illuminated Design - a Creative Design incorporating lights for special effect and as an integral part of the design. Class 2: Exhibitor's Choice - design must be named and coordinate with the theme. The Botanical Arts schedule includes Class 1 "Don't Open 'til Christmas" - a wrapped book (for the Reach Out and Read club project) - book appropriate for children, infants to age 5. Book should be wrapped in holiday paper, decorated with fresh and/or dried plant material. Additional unwrapped books are welcomed and appreciated; however, only one will be judged. Class 2. Exhibitor's Choice - design must be named and coordinate with theme. Please see the handbook for the November Horticulture Schedule. All designs and horticulture must be registered and in place by 9:45 AM in order to be judged.

The April 16th meeting of Sleepy Hollow Garden Club will be via Zoom beginning at 10 am. The program, presented by Master Naturalist Sheryl Smith, is "Native Trees of Virginia". The theme for the meeting is "Hurray Spring". the Design Schedule includes: Class 1 "Alfresco Dining" An exhibition table (not meant to be functional) created artistically to suggest the service of food with no requirements as to the type or number of table appointments; plant material must be used as needed for the overall design. Class 2 Botanical Arts "Elegant Purse" decorated with dried and/or fresh plant material. Class 3 is Exhibitor's Choice - design must be named and coordinate with the design theme. Please refer to your handbook for the Horticulture Schedule. A photo of each design or horticulture exhibit must be emailed to Cindy Butler (design) or Tatter Hartmann (horticulture) by 5 pm on the meeting date.

After our Zoom meeting, we will gather outside, masked and socially distanced, at Epiphany Lutheran Church for our Arbor Day Celebration. We will dedicate a newly planted tree in honor of club member Gail Goodrich Harwood.

The February 19 meeting will be via Zoom. Our program will be presented by Judy Thomas, retired VCU professor and co-founder of the "Plants of the James River" group. The presentation will focus on the work of Newton Ancarrow which impacted the clean-up of the James River in the 1960's and was supported by garden clubs throughout Virginia.

The design theme is "Love Is in the Air". Class 1 is "Romance" - a still life design. Roses must be featured. Class 2 is Botanical Arts - "Elegant Jewelry". Class 3 is Exhibitor's Choice - design must be named and coordinate with the design theme.

In order to receive credit, photographs of both Designs and Horticulture exhibits must be emailed to the appropriate chairperson by the end of the day on Friday, February 19.
