ARE YOU OK?

(Editor’s note: The day after the U.S. and Israel started bombing Iran, Virginia Defender editor Phil Wilayto wrote to an old friend in Tehran and asked if he and his family were OK. The friend is Habib Ahmadzadeh, an author and filmmaker whom we met during our 2007 journey through Iran. The following are emails we have received from Habib. More emails will be posted on the page of The Virginia Defender as they are received.)

March 2

Hello, Phil
thank you for asking how I am. Google cut off my email without any warning. My family and I are healthy for now. A big war has been started by the corrupt people of the world against the innocent people of my country, but here we march under the bombardment every day. Please do something wrong by spreading the protest against this war.
Your friend Habib

Salam Phil
It is very interesting to me that in this brutal war between America and Israel against Iran, all the happy-go-lucky tyrants of Epstein Island are on one side and Iran is on the other. Can you find the name of even one Iranian official or military person in Epstein's documents? There is an exception, of course. The only Westerner whose name is not mentioned in the documents of this island is Netanyahu, who must have equipped this island for his friends. Because there is a proverb that says that if you want to answer all the questions of an exam wrong, you must first know all the correct answers. Two days ago, 161 girl children were killed in a school in the small town of Minab in southern Iran by American bombs. I have come to believe that in the thinking of Western officials, anything is permissible. Either you have to r**e children or kill them.
Thanks Habib

Salam Phil & Ana
Here, two oil refineries in the east and west of Tehran have been bombed, and the fire of both. Has caused a rain of toxic particles., Many people, despite Trump's threat, stay in the streets until morning and chant slogans against him. Today is the ninth day of the war. And the conflict and bombings against everything continue. So far, more than 1,300 civilians have been killed. All of Trump's calculations that the two-day war will end with Iran's defeat and surrender have been wrong.
Good Habib

March 9

Salam Phil,
a new leader was elected last night and people celebrated in the streets. Interestingly, they are not afraid of the occasional bombings. It seems they know that the only way to fight Epstein's islanders who have invaded their country is to stand firm. Only Trump was a fool who was able to replace the old Khamenei with the young Khamenei. Oil has reached $120 and is still rising. We were betrayed again in the middle of negotiations. But the people here are all in high spirits. With Habib's prayers.

March 9

Salam my dear friend Phil,
you asked me how I am. My family and I are under airstrikes at least three times a day without any shelter. This morning, an American bomber bombed the city indiscriminately, killing many families. I am reminded of World War II, but it is strange that people do not abandon street demonstrations against America and Israel day and night. The brave martyrdom of the Iranian leader has reminded them of their historical values again. All the people of Epstein Island on one side and Iran on the other. My dear friend, I do not know how long I will live under these blind bombings, but I say from the bottom of my heart to tell our Jewish friends that I will never attribute the actions of this group of criminals to your religion. Yours, my friend Habib

March 10

Salam Phil & Ana
Today is Tuesday. Last night, Trump announced during his speech that his planes were simultaneously bombing Tehran. Perhaps only Hi**er would be so proud of his crimes. He hit a leader who was a staunch opponent of building an atomic bomb and never made the slightest move in this regard. Trump falsely claimed that the Minab school, which killed 168 young students, was hit by an Iranian missile. A statement that the US Secretary of War himself knows is a lie. Because it was hit by a Tomahawk missile, which Iran does not have at all. Last night, we went through a very difficult bombing without shelter, with my grandchildren and daughters, but interestingly, people were in the streets and chanting. It seems that the more a nation is killed, the more united they become. Everyone here believes that we are paying the price here for not disclosing the documents in Netanyahu's hands about Trump's crimes in the sexual scandals of Epstein's corrupt island. I have seen eight years of the Iran-Iraq war, but here buildings are being hit with precision, with families inside, and the people themselves in the demonstrations. Just pray for us and protest because one day these criminals will come after the people of America themselves.
Good Habib

March 10

Now , rainy Tehran
This is Tehran's Revolution Square. The most dangerous spot that Trump has threatened to bomb. The people of Tehran are now holding Ramadan prayers in the streets under the intermittent rain and praying for the victory of their country. They think they have to do something to defend their country.
Good Habib

March 11

Salem phil,

Tonight, Wednesday, a report on Trump and Bibi's war against the people of Iran. At noon, people, fasting during the month of Ramadan, paid tribute to the commanders and ordinary people who were killed in the surprise war. So far, nearly three thousand Iranian civilians have been killed in this war, unexpectedly and brutally, in their homes. Suddenly, a six-story building collapses on its sleeping residents. I had read in history that the Americans never forgave the Japanese government for the surprise bombing of Pearl Harbor in World War II. And now, twice in the middle of negotiations between the United States and the people of Iran, it will remain in the memories and history of the world. I am only left wondering if Trump's wife has ever spoken the truth to him? It is quite clear from this woman's depressed face that she has not Below is the link to the English TV of Iran. Be sure to send it to your friends so that they do not hear the news one-sidedly. Really pray for us, Habib.

March 12

Salam Phil

Thursday, the 13th day of the war, I am now in a mosque in one of the squares of Tehran, and one of the following nights the bombing has started again. From 10 pm tonight, Israeli and American planes are busy continuing the crimes, but it seems that everyone here knows that accepting a ceasefire again means repeating the same crimes in two months. So, one death and one wail. Tomorrow, a huge march is going to be held all over the country. We were attacked again in the middle of negotiations between Iran and America. Now it is better to understand why, except for a show of false peace, there has never been a real and lasting peace in the Middle East during these seventy years.
Peace Habib

VIRGINIA DEFENDERS ENDORSE THE CALL FOR A 'NATIONAL SHUTDOWN' ON JAN. 30TH

The Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality have endorsed the call for a “National Shutdown” on Friday, Jan. 30: “No work, no school, no shopping.” The official demand is “Stop funding ICE.” We would say, “Abolish ICE now!”

For more than a year, the Defenders have been promoting the idea of a countrywide general strike. In Virginia, where unionized workers make up only about 5% of the workforce, we’re circulating a Resolution among nonunion organizations, expressing support for a general strike. The goal is to encourage Virginia unions to go on record as supporting the idea by showing them there is broad community support for such an action.

We understand that an actual General Strike would require massive organization and resources, which means the unions need to be heavily involved. The call for a general strike on Friday has not been endorsed either by major unions or the Minneapolis labor movement.

Nevertheless, we believe it is important to support all calls for a general strike as a way to promote the idea in as forceful a way as possible, and that is why we are endorsing the call for a “national shutdown” on Jan. 30.

To get involved in the Defenders campaign to build support in Virginia for a General Strike, call or text us at 804.644.5834 or email [email protected]. And follow us on Instagram at virginiadefendernews.

Immigrant Support Work Should Not Put
Vulnerable Communities in Harm’s Way

STATEMENT BY THE VIRGINIA DEFENDERS
CONCERNING THE PARTY FOR SOCIALISM & LIBERATION
Jan. 20, 2026 - Richmond, Virginia

In the 24-year history of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality, we have never once felt the need to publicly criticize another progressive organization. We have had our differences, but always believed it was best to avoid infighting in the movement and instead demonstrate our own politics and practice by our actions and writings.

However, an escalating series of events has led us to the conclusion that we can no longer be silent about the actions of an organization that has deliberately put vulnerable people in real
danger.

Jan. 7 Rally

On Jan 7, 2026, the Richmond chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) held a rally at Richmond’s Monroe Park to protest the fatal shooting of an unarmed legal observer in Minneapolis by an ICE agent. PSL put out an unsigned leaflet calling for people to gather at 7 p.m. at Richmond’s Monroe Park.

Any activist in Richmond knows that the city parks close at sundown, which on Jan. 7 was at 5:08 p.m., so this was a call for an illegal protest. But that’s not the issue here. The issue is that many other people might not be aware that the rally would be illegal.
And since the issue dealt with immigration, that presented the possibility that vulnerable people might show up, unaware that they were facing possible arrest. And if they were undocumented, this could result in their deportation.

The Defenders and other activists were in touch with PSL and cautioned them about this danger. And we asked if PSL had been in touch with members of the immigrant community before calling for this protest. PSL’s response was that the protest was not about immigration or ICE, but rather about the fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen. But at the rally, PSL’s slogans and chants were about immigration and ICE.

When asked about their plan regarding potential police presence, PSL responded by saying that they weren’t worried about police presence given that both VCUPD and RPD would be occupied at the VCU basketball game happening that night.

We had observers at the rally, who reported that there were about 15 cops and 30-40 participants at the rally’s peak. When the police inevitably showed up and told the rally organizers the park had been closed since sundown, PSL insisted to the police and to the rally participants that they had the right to be there until 8 p.m., further jeopardizing the participants.

City Hall Protest

This is not the first time that PSL has put a vulnerable immigrant community in danger. Some months ago, they called a protest on immigration at City Hall. This came after PSL had been invited by local organizers to work in coalition with those organizations and people already connected to the local Latino immigrant community in Richmond. PSL called the rally without consulting with those community organizers.

When immigrant organizers asked if they had been in touch with the targeted community, they said no. The immigrant organizers pointed out that calling a demonstration on an issue that affects a vulnerable community without consulting that community was incorrect. PSL went ahead with the protest anyway.
Rapid Response & Misrepresentation

PSL has gone on to organize what they call a rapid response network, called Defensa, made up of individuals willing to show up in the event of ICE activity in the city.

Immigrant organizers have discussed this with PSL, pointing out that there already was a rapid response network, one led by immigrant activists, and questioned why PSL was duplicating this effort, without consulting the targeted community. PSL continues to organize its separate effort in direct competition with those already doing the work on the ground and therefore creating confusion amongst people rather than power.

The most egregious example of PSL’s insensitivity was when members of their rapid response network showed up at a local shopping mall after a rumor went out that ICE was present there. Without verifying if the plainclothes agents were ICE, PSL went ahead and announced that ICE was in fact present at the mall, that their response network was there and that if other people came out they should follow the leadership of PSL.

When local immigrant organizers arrived at the scene, they witnessed people standing around agents, uncertain of what to do. After investigating, these local organizers (not a part of PSL) discovered that these were state agents conducting a training they often do at a store at the mall. They followed them until they made sure they left the mall.

Against the advice of the local organizers, PSL announced that they had driven ICE out of the shopping mall.

When confronted with this blatant lie, PSL organizers didn’t deny lying, but said they did it so the immigrant community would “feel emboldened” by PSL’s victory. Meanwhile, immigrant workers and customers at the mall likely felt threatened and in danger.
This dishonest manipulation is crass opportunism at its best, and, at its worst, blatant racism. And ignoring the leadership of the immigrant community is a violation of the fundamental right of oppressed peoples to self-determination, a principle that has been the bedrock of the Defenders’ politics and practice.

Attempts to Dialogue

Local immigrant organizers have attempted multiple times to ask that PSL put the needs of the local migrant communities as a priority over its own independent goals. These calls have either been ignored or have yielded no change in approach.

At this point, we have come to the conclusion that we cannot collaborate with PSL on immigration issues until we see concrete change in the way they are operating. We are advising the immigrant community not to engage with PSL or its rapid response team. We are advising all other organizations to take a similar position.

We’re not trying to drive PSL out of the movement and will continue to consider collaborating with them on a case-by-case basis on other issues. As an activist organization that is recent to Richmond and the region, we welcome the support for the work that has been ongoing for many years by local organizers.

One reason we have not spoken out before this is that we know that PSL is on the radar of the federal government. They have been the subject of Congressional investigations and at some point are likely to come under attack.

When one of their members was arrested in Los Angeles and hit with the ridiculous charge of supporting terrorism because they had brought some medical supplies to an anti-ICE protest, we approached the Richmond branch and offered our support. If PSL or any other progressive organization comes under political attack, we stand ready to offer our support. No one gets abandoned, no one gets thrown under the bus. This has been our practice since our founding in 2002.

But we cannot remain silent while this or any organization puts a vulnerable community in danger by lying to them about ICE activities; by ignoring the calls for collaboration with the communities they say they want to support; and by putting their own sectarian needs above the needs of the people.

If anyone would like to discuss this matter further, please reach out to us at [email protected] or call or text 804-644-5834.

RICHMOND RALLY DEMANDS: ICE OUT!

By Phil Wilayto
for The Virginia Defender

RICHMOND, VA, Jan. 18 -- It was cold, it was rainy, it snowed - but none of that stopped more than 400 people from turning out today to demand that ICE get out of Richmond and the entire state of Virginia.

The rally, held at Richmond’s Monroe Park and organized by Virginia Immigrants for Life, Liberation, Autonomy & Solidarity (VILLAS) and the Immigrant Support Committee of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality, was called after activists received information that 180 more ICE agents had arrived in Richmond.

The timing was ominous: This was the weekend that Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, was being inaugurated as Virginia’s 75th - and first woman - governor. The Democrats had also swept the legislative elections, holding the state senate and retaking the House of Delegates.

That puts Richmond, Virginia’s capital city with a “majority-minority” population, whose mayor, Danny Avula, is not only a Democrat but also an immigrant, in the group of Democrat-led cities targeted by the Trump administration for mass immigration arrests and deportations.

ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has been in Richmond for many years and has been more active since Donald Trump was reelected president. But an increase of close to 200 agents represents a major escalation, presenting greatly increased dangers for the local immigrant population.

In fact, the vice chair of the board of supervisors of neighboring Henrico County has just posted on social media that ICE agents are going door-to-door in the Short Pump area of the county.

In response to news of the influx of ICE agents, there was a flurry of organizing meetings and then a public call for the rally. The word went out through a press release, a mass email, social media, encrypted chats - all within less than 48 hours.

The demands of the rally were similar to those that VILLAS and the Defenders had raised at a press conference and rally held Aug. 11 in front of Richmond City Hall, that basically called on the city government to do more to protect local immigrants, while declaring the community’s determination to provide that protection itself. (See the demands listed below)

Today’s rally, chaired by Fern Diaz-Castro, who heads up the Defenders’ Immigrant Support Committee, included as speakers Gustavo Espinoza of VILLAS, who shared words from a detained community member; Victoria McCullough with VILLAS and the Richmond chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA); and Kaylin Cecchini of the Richmond Community Legal Fund.

Solidarity messages were read from the Rev. Rodney Hunter, pastor of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, a historic Black congregation in the city’s East End, and Lillie “Ms. K” Branch-Kennedy, a longtime prisoner advocate and founder of Resource Information Help for the Disadvantaged & Disenfranchised. There also was a solidarity statement from a member of Richmond’s Palestinian community, who, for security reasons, asked not to be named.

Finally, a song and poem were performed by the cultural worker Steller.

News media covering the rally included the Richmond Free Press, Style Weekly, Commonwealth Times, RVA Mag, Richmond’s Channel 6-CBS and Channel 19-CBS, which sent a crew from Charlottesville, 70 miles away.

Across the city, several organizations are promoting new networks and collective efforts to respond to this increase in attacks on the immigrant community. The message from today’s rally was that our immigrant communities will not stand alone.

To get involved in the expanding efforts to support Virginia’s immigrant communities, email [email protected] or call or text 804.644.5834.

ICE OUT OF RICHMOND DEMANDS:

* We need to pass policies banning and ending all local and state collaboration with any federal immigration enforcement agencies, including but not limited to all 287(G) contracts.

* We need to ban masked and unidentified policing.

* We must ensure that Richmond does not renegotiate any contract with Flock surveillance cameras and/or any other surveillance technology.

* We need to ensure legal and financial support from the state and the city for those detained.

* We need to shut down all detention centers in Virginia.

* Elected local and state representatives must accompany their constituents to immigration court hearings to protect against ICE kidnappings and ensure public accountability during proceedings.

* We need sustainable sources of funding for the groups and organizations that have always filled in the gaps between our immigrant communities and local & state governments.

* We demand that if our city and state leaders fail to act, all Richmond and Greater Richmond residents step up and protect our neighbors from detention, deportation, and police violence. We have no other choice.
