The RVAPB Staff just wrapped our FIRST book club read. 'Budget Justice' by - the book offers an analysis of public budgets and their relationship to a healthy democracy. We're studying our butts off in preparation for our next cycle 😤

We recommend this book to folks looking to learn more about,

- How a City Budget can be more accessible to the public.
- How budgets can more clearly address community needs.
- Ways that community members can be more engaged in the budget through programs like participatory budgeting.

Tag someone in the comments that you believe would enjoy reading this! And if you have a suggestion for our NEXT book club read please leave it in the comments!

🌳 From idea to impact—this is what the People’s Budget looks like in action.

This PB Project Highlight follows a community-led idea all the way through the process: planting trees in high heat-index areas across Jackson Ward, Carver, Newtowne West, and Scott’s Addition. What started as multiple resident ideas became one shared priority—cooling our neighborhoods, improving air quality, and making our streets more livable.

Here’s how it came together:
💭 Ideas submitted by residents
🛠️ Refined into a single project by community members
🔍 Reviewed for feasibility by City staff
🗳️ Chosen by 87% of District 2 voters
🌱 Now moving into implementation

This is Participatory Budgeting at work—community voices shaping real investments in Richmond.

PS. if you're into trees check out a few of our friends RVAgreen 2050

RVAPB Cycle 1 project tracking is LIVE! 📊

We have developed a map along with a status tracker that will display project details and updates -

Things to keep in mind:

- points on the map identify the general area of a project, however a project may have many sites
- project updates will be made when substantial progress has been made (typically resulting in a status change)
- some project details are subject to change, but we will ALWAYS get the project as CLOSE to the desired community outcomes as possible
