On 3 June 1945, the ships of Task Group (TG) 38.1, built around aircraft carriers USS Hornet (CV-12) and USS Bennington (CV-20), and the oilers in Task Group 30.8 were operating east of Okinawa. Although a tropical disturbance had been reported forming east of the Philippines, confused sighting reports and communications delays deprived Third Fleet of timely and accurate location information. On 5 June, the small and tight typhoon overtook TG 38.1, which passed through the eye of the storm at 0700 that morning. Hurricane force winds of 70 knots (80.5 miles per hour), with gusts up to 100 knots (115 miles per hour), damaged almost every ship in TG 38.1 and TG 30.8. In the former, heavy cruiser USS Pittsburgh (CA-72) lost her bow (see the photo below). The bow section, being essentially water tight, remained afloat and was eventually towed back to port. Even in the face of mortal danger, sailors will never miss an opportunity for humor. They dubbed the bow section "USS McKeesport", which is a suburb of Pittsburgh.

Holiday traditions are reminders of our past and a means of looking forward as well. One of the best holiday traditions at Red Oak Victory is the movie "It's A Wonderful Life". Starring James Stewart, Donna Reed, and a host of other recognizable character actors, this film is seen as not only a great holiday movie but one of the best pictures of all time. Come to Red Oak Victory on Thursday night, December 12 for our showing of "It's A Wonderful Life". Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the movie starts at 6:30. There are no reservations and admission if free (although a $10 donation is much appreciated!). Snacks and drinks are available for purchase.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone from the crew of the Red Oak Victory. Heres a great article on the front page of the Richmond Post about our 80th Anniversary Fundraiser Dinner-Dance. We'll do it again next year so if you missed it this time, you'll have another chance in 2025!

Cargo ships in World War II carried vital supplies. Red Oak Victory carried fleet ammunition to keep the US Navy's Pacific Fleet in the fight. But one of the more important tasks for a cargo vessel during the war was "The Great Turkey Lift" in November, 1944. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

On Thanksgiving, we're looking back at an unsung hero of the holiday during World War II, a merchant ship called SS Great Republic.

Our Story

The SS Red Oak Victory; built by men and women of diverse backgrounds in the Kaiser Shipyards, Richmond, California. She is the only surviving ship built in these yards. Red Oak Victory served in the Pacific Theater in WWII with the US Navy and for twenty plus years thereafter as a merchant vessel including 19 trips carrying supplies to Vietnam. She is now an active museum in the Richmond shipyard and is run entirely by volunteers. We will be lighting off her engines for the first time in 50 years in the Summer of 2018 and then cruising the San Francisco Bay approximately a year after that.

We also run a very active social program including Pancake Breakfasts, Swing Dances, an Independence Day Celebration, and a Fleet Week event. See our website at www.redoakvictory.us for details.
