ART 180

ART 180 Young people turning lives and communities around through art The name reflects their vision of turning lives and communities around 180 degrees.

ART 180 gives young people in challenging circumstances the chance to express themselves through art, and to share their stories with others. Since 1998, the nonprofit organization has worked with youth in the Richmond area to create art that explains and illustrates their feelings, thoughts, and experiences. Partnering with other organizations that serve young people, ART 180 designs projects tha

t allow for self-expression, and creates venues for this expression in the community. ART 180 also operates Atlas, an art center for teens and gallery space for young people in Jackson Ward.

We’re excited to partner with to host Protect Ya Neck, a one-day helmet customization workshop led by artist

Through illustration, storytelling, and personal style, youth will transform free bike and scooter helmets into wearable works of art that reflect their stories, creativity, and community. Inspired by the “Protect Ya Neck” by Wu-Tang Clan, this workshop is about protection in every sense protecting yourself, your creativity, and your neck of the woods.

The Bird helmets are designed for safety in public space, but through customization, participants reclaim them as personal and collective expressions of identity and imagination.

After 27 years of service to Richmond’s youth,  ART 180 will close its doors on August 28th, 2026.

This difficult decision has come after over 6 years of financial strain and shifts in funding that made it increasingly difficult to sustain our programs.

It is the result of changing conditions over time that have made continued operations unsustainable, despite the strength of the work. Our goal now is to end strong with a slate of summer programs and events, and a final exhibition opening on Friday, August 7th, 2026 in our Atlas gallery.

To be clear, ART 180 is not turning off the lights immediately. Every program currently running will continue. Every young person currently participating in programs will finish what they started. The organization's final months will be a closing season designed to honor the work and invest in what comes next.

Head to art180.org to read through our full statement.

We will miss being part of this arts community, especially for young creatives.
