Fern is a fearless, friendly little mare with a big personality! She’s great to lead or ground drive, and she loves to roll on the ground and scratch herself on anything-including people. She was sold at auction as a tiny foal.

Fern has dwarfism, which gives her a cute under-bite (like she’s always smiling!) and a unique way of moving.
She receives special care, including regular visits from the horse dentist.

Fern’s favorite hobbies are rolling, rubbing and showing off her brave spirit!

Today we are celebrating World Donkey Day with one of the sweetest souls at the farm… Pickles!

Pickles is known for his gentle nature, playful personality, and love of a good back scratch. Whether he is spending time with participants, playing with toys, or relaxing beside his best friend Maya, Pickles has a special way of bringing calm and kindness to everyone he meets.

Before joining Main Stay in 2021, Pickles was rescued from a livestock auction by a local family who lovingly rehabilitated him for a year. While much of his early story remains unknown, one thing is certain: he has found his forever home here at the farm.

Happy World Donkey Day, Pickles! 🫏✨

Last month, Occupational Therapy Assistant students from McHenry County College and Occupational Therapy students from North Central College participated in one of our Harness the Power of Your Team sessions, where they partnered with Harry and Chip for a hands-on problem-solving activity. As Harry and Chip worked to push a large ball across the arena, students approached the experience through the lens of future healthcare professionals, treating the horses like patients while practicing observation, communication, adaptability, and teamwork.

What made the experience so powerful was watching these students apply the skills they are learning in school in a completely different environment alongside our horses. At Main Stay, our herd has a unique way of teaching lessons that extend far beyond the arena. 💚🐴

Funding for this program was provided through the Friends of MCC Foundation. One of the goals of the session was to encourage collaboration between the OTA and OT students.

Yesterday’s double rainbow reminded us just how special this farm truly is.

We have the privilege of witnessing the powerful impact that horses, animals and nature can have on the lives of those we serve, and we are endlessly grateful for this community that makes it all possible. 💚🌈

From first visit to published authors, what a day at the farm!

Main Stay welcomed 4th graders from Lotus Elementary for their very first Books in the Barnyard experience, and they jumped right in!

Students read the stories and letters they wrote about our Littles herd… to those same herd members.

They also planted marigolds while learning about pollinators, participated in thoughtful story time discussions, and spent time in an illustrator corner where they brought their stories to life.

One of the most special moments? One of our facilitators got to partner with her daughter, a 4th grade teacher visiting with her class. 💚

This is what Books in the Barnyard is all about: building confidence, sparking creativity, and helping every reader find their voice.
