Color Country Wreaths Across America

In 1983, seven USAF servicemen were lost in a fatal B-52 crash. Coast Guard veteran Roger Edington hiked 6 hours round trip in cold, blustery weather to place a Wreaths Across America remembrance wreath on the memorial headstone where these serviceman perished. A story about the crash is provided in the link below. By the way, this hike is very rugged and there is no trail. Thank you Roger from Color Country Chapter DAR for your efforts on making this rigorous journey to say their names once more and thank them for their service. https://www.lostflights.com/Military-Aviation-Archaeology/41183-USAF-Boeing-B-52G-58/i-WwdVvn7/A

Cap City!!! The 2021 Altrusa International Convention has moved to Charlotte due to COVID. That’s a home town for me and where I went to engineering school at UNCC (49ers!) and started with Altria there. Who’s ready for a road trip and to learn some Charlotte history?

Adult Children of Aging Parents - Centre County

👥 We have a special ACAP Centre Country introduction today...

Meet Jill Lillie, our Chapter Coordinator!

Jill's career started in the insurance business. She worked for almost 25 years as an insurance broker and office manager, selling and servicing policies for Kissinger & Bryant, an independent Insurance agency.

In 2002 she had the opportunity to become the Director of Marketing at The Village at Penn State and then Director of Residency Planning at Foxdale Village, two continuing care retirement communities in State College. After retiring in 2015, she opted a year later to begin work as an independent contract worker in senior living sales for both Love and Company and Creating Results.

While working in senior living sales, she spoke with many adult children who were trying to help their parents make a good decision about their future. Many were frustrated and expressed the wish that they had more information about their options a lot sooner. To that end, she invited Jane Everson and Frances Hall to come speak at Foxdale about the new non-profit they founded, called ACAP (Adult Children of Aging Parents). With much support from the local senior living community, Centre County became the first chapter of ACAP. Currently ACAP Centre County is guided by a dedicated leadership team of which she is the chapter coordinator.

And ACAP has now expanded to include 5 chapters, with more to come!

What about the adult caregiving process do you wish you had known sooner?

Today, Capital City donated back packs with requested school supplies to children entering pre-K virtual school. The two masked ladies in the middle are Jackie and Mary Jo Presley or Mary Jo and Jackie!

Families First, a program of Chesterfield Prevention Services, extends our gratitude to Altrusa International for providing bookbags full of supplies for our children entering pre-K virtually next week. This generous donation will help our participants be prepared and excited for this next step in their education!

Today, we are moved by YOU. Despite flooding and incessant rain, volunteers came by the carloads to help us continue the first part of our move into the CARITAS Center. Soon, these apartments will become a hopeful sober living community and also add to the city’s affordable housing options. We’re working to end homelessness and addiction together! Thank you!

The bird feeder project is placing feeders outside the windows of nursing homes and other institutions so that the residents can enjoy watching the birds. Our club is sponsoring feeders outside of the House of Care and Centre Crest, and will keep them filled for the rest of the summer! Thanks, Jill, for picking them up!

On Thursday, May 7 Altrusa of Capital City delivered badly needed food, toiletries, and feminine products to the Sacred Heart Center, a nonprofit center serving the Latino community in South Richmond. On Friday, April 10 Altrusa of Capital City dropped off a diaper donation to Families First of Colonial Heights and Chesterfield County. Their annual Diaper Drive did not fare well this year due to the closing of libraries, their usual drop off spots. The need for diapers was especially acute as many parents lost their jobs due to Corona V19.

Maintaining social distancing was a bit tricky but we managed to pass off 1216 diapers fairly quickly and shouted words of encouragement as we left.
