VDH recently announced the end of the 2026 measles outbreak in Buckingham and Cumberland Counties.

Measles cases are still spreading in the U.S. and we want to remind everyone to stay up-to-date on routine vaccinations.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that can spread like wildfire. Vaccination can stop it. A high vaccination rate can prevent large measles outbreaks. If you have measles, up to 90% of the people close to you, who are not immune, will also become infected.

Letā€™s keep Virginia schools safe and healthy this year! Talk with your childā€™s healthcare provider to make sure your child is protected from measles.

is a very contagious viral illness. Symptoms include fever, cough, and rash. Measles can be very serious and can cause pneumonia, brain inflammation, and death.

The best protection against measles is the measles (MMR) vaccine. Two doses are recommended to protect against measles. They are recommended at:

šŸ”¹12 to15 months of age.
šŸ”¹4 to 6 years of age.
šŸ”¹Babies 6-11 months old traveling abroad or to an outbreak setting should receive one early dose. They will still need to get the usual two doses at the appropriate ages to be fully vaccinated.
