U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Michael Childs, a rifleman with 3rd Marine Division, recently competed in a Rifle Squad Competition, which tested his jungle survival skills, basic infantry tactics and weapons handling.

Upon graduation from Waynesboro High School, Childs, a native of Waynesboro, Virginia, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2017.

4th Marine Corps District

Wrestlers with the National Collegiate Wrestling Association competed in the United States Marine Corps Star City Classic Wrestling Tournament at the Salem Civic Center, Roanoke, Virginia on Jan. 17, 2021. The Marines of Officer Selection Team Roanoke were at the event looking for individuals with great leadership, decisiveness, and judgment, and offer them the challenge of becoming a Marine Corps officer. Ashley Gippe, a Marine officer candidate with the Officer Selection Office in Norfolk, Va., talks about her experience playing division 1 field hockey at James Madison University and how the team mentality and leadership she learned playing field hockey motivated her to seek more physical challenges and to lead Marines. Marine Detachment, Naval School of Music

FEATURED STUDENT: Lance Corporal Tyler A. Crocker, from #Blacksburg, VA, is currently enrolled at the Naval School of Music to train as a musician in the U.S. Marine Corps Music Program.

Lance Corporal Crocker went to Blacksburg High School and graduated from Liberty University with a Bachelor’s in Music Performance, emphasis in percussion. While in college, he participated in the Liberty University Marching Band (Official), wind symphony, orchestra, indoor drumline, percussion ensemble, and jazz band. LCpl Crocker also worked as a percussion instructor in the greater Lynchburg area teaching drumline for Liberty Christian Academy (LCA), Brookville High School, and Rustburg High School. After graduating from LU, he worked as a percussion tech for the Liberty University Marching Band and was the Program Coordinator for the Liberty University Indoor Drumline. Outside of his work with the university, LCpl Crocker served as the Principle Timpanist for the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra. His main musical influences are Darrell Pearman of Blacksburg High School, Dr. Kevin Super, Dr. Stephen Kerr, Dr. Kathryn Wert, Jay Ware, Tyler Loftin and Tommy Goddard of Liberty University. Lance Corporal Crocker was recruited by Lynchburg Marines of 4th Marine Corps District.

“I’ve been working to become a United States Marine Corps Musician for almost two years. I auditioned for the music program in July of 2018 and was accepted on my musicianship but was ultimately denied due to being overweight. Losing over 60lbs to meet my goal, I set a standard for my transformation from civilian to United States Marine. This has affected my outlook on every part of my life, faith, family, and my musical career. Here at the Naval School of Music, I am taking on more challenges, but with the help of my mentors and leaders, I know that I will succeed in completing my goals.”
