📚🐻 The partnership between Grant Elementary School and UC Berkeley Athletics is in its third year and continues to be rooted in a strong commitment to literacy, connection, and student success!

Through the “Go Girls Go Bears Go Play” program, students take part in an annual summer reading challenge that rewards reading and engagement with free tickets to a Cal football game each September. This year, the initiative expanded through Grant’s literacy focus, encouraging students in grades 3–5 to visit their local library, sign up for a library card, and read 30 minutes a day, five days a week, complete three books, and submit reading logs to UC Berkeley Athletics. Participating students also earn access to a schoolwide educational field trip, with transportation provided so the community can attend together.

This work reflects a shared goal of strengthening students’ connection to reading and libraries while building lifelong literacy habits.

On June 2, UC Berkeley student-athletes visited Grant Elementary, engaging students in an inspiring Q&A and sharing how literacy and education have shaped their own journeys. The visit was filled with energy and excitement, leaving students motivated, encouraged, and eager to keep reading! 💙

🎨✨ Hundreds of students, families, staff, and community members came together on Saturday, May 30, at Washington Elementary School to help bring a new series of murals to life across the campus.

Supported by muralist Richard Salazar and team, as well as local partners and sponsors, the community joined forces to paint vibrant artwork that reflects the spirit, culture, and pride of Washington Elementary and the surrounding neighborhood. The mural project was created to celebrate community, creativity, and connection while transforming school spaces into colorful works of art for students to enjoy for years to come.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this first Mural Day such a memorable success! 💙🎨
