Registration is now OPEN for the next VAMFT Quarterly Palaver Discussion!

• Topic: Couples and Neurodiversity
• Friday, July 17, 2026 | 12:00–1:30 PM
• Live Online Event

Issues related to neurodiversity encompass aspects of cognitive and emotional processing and behaviors. Approximately 2% of children are diagnosed with autism and 5-10% with ADHD, while specific learning disabilities provide another challenge for many. Neurodiversity is normative, though its effects present differently in people – even those with the “same” diagnosis. Many are not diagnosed until adulthood. And often, with no awareness of the presence or effects of “brain differences,” adult (and parent-child) relationships can be challenged by neurodiversity.
We will consider how neurodivergence affects couples, and how the effects on their work in therapy. We will share some of the relevant research AND allow plenty of time for comments, questions and case discussion – we will welcome your active participation – and we will not be recording.

Goals:
1) Define neurodiversity and its prevalence
2) Consider the effects of neurodivergence on couples’ lives
3) Discuss issues in therapeutic processing and effective interventions in working with couples where one or both are neurodiverse

This Palaver discussion will be led by VAMFT member Elizabeth Hinkle, LMFT. Elizabeth is in private practice in Virginia, working with adolescents and adults in her trauma-informed work, and has an avid interest in neurodivergence in individuals and the effects on their relationships.

• Free 1.5 CEUs for VAMFT Members!
• This discussion will not be recorded to protect confidentiality in any discussion of clinical cases, so plan to join us live!

Each month, we're highlighting one of our incredible VAMFT members! Reach out if you’d like to be featured or to nominate someone else!

This month, meet Kathryn “Kassie” Welch. Kassie is a Resident in Marriage and Family Therapy practicing in Virginia and Florida through telehealth. Her work focuses primarily on couples therapy, with particular interest in helping high achieving individuals and couples navigate communication difficulties, emotional disconnection, neurodivergence, financial stress, caregiving responsibilities, and life transitions.

Kassie’s clinical approach integrates emotional regulation, practical communication tools, and evidence-based relationship work, including Gottman Method Couples Therapy. She values creating a collaborative and emotionally safe environment where clients can better understand the patterns shaping their relationships and develop healthier, more sustainable ways of relating.

Prior to becoming a therapist, Kassie spent more than twenty years working in real estate lending, financial services, and financial literacy education. That background continues to inform her work with individuals and couples navigating the emotional and relational impact of financial stress, decision-making, and changing family roles over time.

Additional areas of interest include trauma-informed care, neurodivergent relationships, veteran and first responder experiences, and helping couples who may appear successful outwardly while struggling privately within their relationships.

Kassie is passionate about increasing awareness of relationship-centered and systemic approaches to therapy and enjoys writing and speaking about couples work, emotional health, and relational well-being.

A new federal student loan rule could make it harder to become a therapist in the U.S.—at a time when more than 130 million Americans already live in areas with a shortage of mental health providers.

Today, AAMFT joined a lawsuit with Democracy Forward challenging this policy, which limits access to federal loans for future marriage and family therapists and threatens the pipeline of mental health professionals nationwide.

This isn’t just about students—it’s about access to care for individuals, couples, and families across the country.

The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is proud to announce the launch of a grant opportunity designed to support an HBCU in developing an accredited graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy. We recognize that launching a new graduate program—especially one that meets accreditation standards—requires significant investment and institutional capacity. This grant funding is designed to help reduce those barriers and support your institution in building a strong, sustainable program.
Whether your institution is in early exploration or already planning a program, this funding is intended to help move that vision forward with the resources needed for success. Learn more about the opportunity and application process with the link below.

Curious about what VAMFT is up to on behalf of Virginia MFTs? Advocacy updates:
VAMFT is a proud member of the Behavioral Health Providers Coalition. With some tenacious lobbying, and excellent leadership (Rebecca Kaderli!), we worked with Delegate Willett and Senator Deeds on HB656 and SB524. Both bills have passed into law and will take effect 7/1/2026. These bills address parity for mental health insurance coverage, network adequacy for better access to care, and insurance company accountability in providing benefits appropriately. You can read more about them here: https://virginiaaba.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Coalition-One-Pager-1.17.26-.pdf; https://lis.virginia.gov/bill-details/20261/HB656, and https://lis.virginia.gov/bill-details/20261/SB524

Clinicians who accept TRICARE : Many have experienced non-payment, incorrect reimbursements and demands to providers for returned funds (“claw-backs”). Recent reporting at military.com highlights this is a nationwide, serious issue affecting providers and beneficiaries and that the surest way to get action is to contact your congressional representatives. They also recommend contacting the Defense Health Agency, as Tricare is managed by them. (Read about it here: https://www.military.com/benefits/tricare/tricare-providers-have-gone-more-year-without-payment-now-some-are-getting-clawback-letters.html?ESRC=mr_260413.nl)
VAMFT President Julie Sayre has contacted Tricare, Senators Warner and Kaine, Representative Cline, State Senator French and Delate Oates about these issues, requesting they uphold demands Congress is making (through the National Defense Authorization Act) to hold Tricare responsible for their persistent chaos, lack of clarity and mismanagement of benefits! Senator Mark Warner’s office has a caseworker who will provide healthcare practitioner advocacy – If you’ve experienced issues with Tricare, contact Senator Warner’s office directly [email protected], or reach out to Julie Sayre [email protected]

Our advocacy efforts would not be possible without our members!
