Learn about the new Statewide Pro Bono Portal. It is now live! bit.ly/ProBonoPortal-News

The Virginia State Bar is excited to announce the launch of a new Statewide Pro Bono Portal in partnership with pro bono management platform Paladin.

The online platform will enhance pro bono engagement across the state by facilitating connections between volunteer lawyers and Qualified Legal Service Providers (QLSPs) to provide legal assistance. Volunteers can search for matters that align with their interests and connect directly with QLSPs to get started.

This initiative is part of Pro Bono Virginia (PBV), a groundbreaking effort to create a permanent statewide infrastructure that turns interested attorneys into capable volunteers—providing the visibility, training, support, and community they need to take their first case and then stay engaged over time.

The Supreme Court of Virginia has recently introduced new amendments that broaden the eligibility to transition into emeritus status, making it even easier for experienced attorneys to limit their practice to pro bono service.

Now, attorneys need to have 10 years of practice experience or 10 years of active VSB membership (previously, 20 years of practice was required). Additionally, applicants must be in good standing, must have no discipline imposed by the VSB or any other jurisdiction in the past 10 years, and must be affiliated with at least one Qualified Legal Services Provider (QLSP). Supervision of pro bono work by the QLSP is not required.

Find out more about the benefits experienced attorneys can bring to the pro bono cause by watching the emeritus session from the VSB Pro Bono Conference. The session is now available for on-demand CLE credit: https://bit.ly/VSB-Emeritus-Webinar

Find updated information on recent changes to the emeritus class on the TIES page: https://bit.ly/VSB-TIES.
