Our HR Manager, Rionne, shared a great historical perspective on why we celebrate Women’s History Month!

Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to United States history. From Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States.

The actual celebration of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.

A few years later, the idea had caught on within communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.

Today is March 8th and we at Community Housing Development Corporation recognize International Women's Day.

We celebrate all of you!

“I would like to thank CHDC for all of its efforts in helping improve my future by providing assistance to purchase a car.” Renita, Richmond, CA

This vehicle will help me transport my daughter to school, help me increase the amount of hours at my job in order to earn more. Also, this vehicle will help me gain an independence I haven't had for some time.

So, I truly want to say from the bottom of my heart, Thanks for your generosity and effort to help me build my future. #electriccar #richmondca

“What a wonderful program! I’m absolutely stoked to have gotten this support to afford an electric-powered car (with the gas-powered generator for long trips).” - Eli, Oakland, CA

Moving away from fossil fuels asap is essential for all our future and all our children, so it can’t just be for rich people. And it was an unexpected bonus to get all the help with navigating dealers, ensuring a thorough inspection, confidence in the loan company and all those pieces. CHDC was fantastic in helping me move through all the steps throughout. I really hope lots more people get the benefits of this program, and that the program and others like it can be expanded as much as possible. What an immense help to our little family, to local air quality, and to our urgently needed shift away from fossil fuels! “What a wonderful program! I’m absolutely stoked to have gotten this support to afford an electric-powered car (with the gas-powered generator for long trips).”
