Snapped this picture of the Amaranth growing at the garden yesterday.

Did you know that Amaranth is an annual plant that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It can be grown from seed, with flowers typically appearing about three months after sowing.

Amaranth is valued as an ornamental plant for its striking appearance, but it's also a pseudocereal, meaning its seeds are consumed like grains. The seeds are known for their complete protein content, which is unusual for a plant source.

Historical Significance:
Amaranth was a significant food source for ancient American cultures, including the Aztecs, and has been domesticated for thousands of years.

Health Benefits:
Studies suggest that amaranth seeds or oil may benefit those with hypertension and cardiovascular disease, potentially lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

This is just a tiny bit of info on this amazingly beneficial plant!

The community garden is PACKED with this, growing every where! Please feel free to go and snag some if you’d like! It really does grow like a w**d.

💧This month is National Water Quality Month!

Did you know that soil runoff is a major threat to clean water? When excess soil washes into our rivers and streams, it can cloud the water, harm aquatic life, and even increase the risk of flooding in our communities.

One simple way to help is by planting native grass and plants in your yard or garden. Their deep root systems help hold the soil in place during heavy rains, reducing erosion and keeping our waterways clearer and healthier.

Do you have a favorite native grass/plant?

Take Some. Grow Some. Share Some.

The Brazoria County Master Gardeners are partnering with the Brazoria County Library System to bring Seed Exchange Libraries to each of the branch libraries in the county. The Lake Jackson Library inspired us with their successful seed exchange program and a team of Master Gardeners have taken the idea and we are in the process of transplanting it to all our County branch libraries. We will be providing ongoing support by adding seed packets and gardening resources throughout the seasons.

This is my last little harvest there is tomatoes, okra, eggplant, and four kinds of peppers. There are two spaghetti squash that are not ready to harvest along with two watermelon and two cantaloupe so hopefully somebody will pick up where I left off and continue to grow these amazing vegetables. Thanks so much.
