Firefighter Friday | Meet Firefighter Raymond Mendoza Jr.!

This week, we’re continuing our Firefighter Friday spotlight series with Firefighter Raymond Mendoza Jr., who has proudly served with the Richwood Volunteer Fire Department for 3 years!

Outside of the department, Raymond works as a petroleum inspector. Firefighting has always been a big part of his family, with several family members serving as volunteer or industrial firefighters. Growing up around the fire service inspired him to follow in their footsteps and serve his own community.

One of Raymond’s favorite parts of serving Richwood is being able to help people when they need it most. Whether it’s a fire, an accident, or simply lending a hand in the community, he values knowing he can make a difference.

His proudest moments are the calls where training and teamwork come together to help someone on one of the worst days of their life. Knowing he was there when someone needed him is something that sticks with him.

Favorite equipment: Extrication tools - Raymond enjoys vehicle extrication and the teamwork and skill it takes to safely get someone out of a bad situation

Outside the station: Spending time with his family, working on his Jeep, off-roading, going to the beach, fishing, traveling, and anything outdoors

Words to live by: “Why do we train so hard? So I can breathe. Why do I need to breathe? So I can think. Why do I need to think? So I can win.”

And we couldn’t leave out another favorite: “Raise hell, praise Dale.”

There’s also something Raymond wants people to understand about the volunteer fire service: being a volunteer firefighter takes a lot of time, training, and dedication. They may be volunteers, but when the call comes in, they take that responsibility seriously and work hard to be ready.

And that need for volunteers continues right here in Richwood.

If you’ve ever felt that same calling to serve, we’re always ready to welcome new members. You don’t have to start out knowing how to be a firefighter, you just have to be willing to learn, train, and serve.

Labor Day Closure | City offices, including City Hall, Municipal Court, Utility Billing, and Public Works, will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.

WEATHER UPDATE | Tropical Storm Edouard

The latest forecast continues to look favorable for Richwood, with the primary impacts from Tropical Storm Edouard expected to remain east of our area.

Richwood is not within the Tropical Storm Warning area. Brazoria County does remain under a Flood Watch, so we could still see periods of locally heavy rainfall and isolated flooding.

We’ll continue to monitor conditions, but at this time, no significant impacts are anticipated for Richwood. Please continue to stay weather aware as the system moves inland.

Weather Update | The Flood Watch has been expanded to include Brazoria County and will remain in effect through Wednesday morning. The heaviest rainfall is currently expected late Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening.

Please stay weather-aware and use caution on the roads. We’ll continue monitoring conditions and share updates as needed.

WEATHER UPDATE | We are continuing to monitor Tropical Depression Five as it moves through the northern Gulf toward the Upper Texas Coast.

At this time, Richwood and Brazoria County are not under a Tropical Storm Warning, and significant wind or storm surge impacts are not expected for our area.

Our primary concern is rainfall. Periods of moderate to heavy rain are possible beginning late tonight and continuing through Tuesday, which could result in temporary street flooding, particularly in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.

Residents are encouraged to remain weather-aware, use caution during heavy rainfall, and never drive through flooded roadways.

City staff will continue monitoring conditions and will provide additional updates if anything changes.

Firefighter Friday | Meet Assistant Chief Kyle Stephens!

This week, we’re continuing our Firefighter Friday spotlight series with Assistant Chief Kyle Stephens, who has proudly served with the Richwood Volunteer Fire Department for 16 years!

Outside of the department, Kyle works as a process operator and industrial firefighter. His reason for entering the fire service is simple: he has always felt a calling to help people on their worst days.

After 16 years of serving Richwood, one of Kyle’s favorite parts of the job is not only being there when his neighbors need help, but also watching the next generation of firefighters grow.

Some of his proudest moments have come from training up-and-coming firefighters and knowing that, on someone’s worst day, he and his fellow volunteers may be able to ease even a little of the heartache.

Favorite apparatus: Engine 1 - it carries the tools and water needed to handle just about any situation
Outside the station: Spending time with his wife and kids, taking his Jeep off-roading and camping, and going on cruises

There’s also something Kyle wants people to understand about the volunteer fire service: volunteers make up a huge part of the firefighters serving communities across the country. They choose to answer the call, train, respond, and serve their neighbors because they care about their communities.

And that need for volunteers continues right here in Richwood.

Waterway Debris Cleanup Project Update | Debris removal efforts related to Hurricane Beryl are officially underway!

Work began August 10 along Upper Oyster Creek near Sims Road, with crews working north. To date, approximately 2.5 miles of Upper Oyster Creek have been cleared of storm-related debris.

Crews are continuing to work through the project area, and we’re glad to see progress being made on this important cleanup effort.

Brazoria County has also created an interactive GIS map where residents can view the debris removal project limits and follow the areas included in the project:
