⚠️ JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE A ROLLBACK OR WRECKER DOESN’T MEAN THEY’RE LEGAL. ⚠️

Facebook yard sale pages are full of “I got a guy” and “My buddy has a rollback.” But owning a rollback does not automatically make someone a legitimate towing company.

Before trusting someone with a vehicle worth thousands of dollars, ask questions:

👉 Do they have the proper FOR-HIRE registration/tags to haul vehicles for compensation?
👉 Do they carry proper commercial towing insurance?
👉 Is the business properly registered and operating legally?
👉 Is their equipment properly maintained and insured?
👉 If they damage your vehicle, who is paying for it?

There’s a big difference between owning a rollback and operating a legitimate towing business.

Legitimate towing companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars every year on commercial insurance, FOR-HIRE registration, equipment, maintenance, licensing and the other expenses required to operate professionally.

That $25 or $50 you saved using somebody from a Facebook yard sale page won’t seem like much when your vehicle is damaged and you discover they weren’t properly insured to begin with.

💡 Know who you’re handing your keys to.

Support the legitimate local businesses that invest in doing things the right way,not just the cheapest person in the Facebook comments with a rollback.

A solid reminder from CTTA!

🚨 California Towers: Is Their MCP Valid?

A reminder to all California towing professionals: Before releasing a vehicle to another towing company, you must obtain a copy of their valid Motor Carrier Permit (MCP). Likewise, when retrieving a vehicle, you must provide a copy of your valid MCP. This requirement under California Vehicle Code §34620 helps ensure carriers maintain proper insurance, workers' compensation, and safety compliance while protecting the public and supporting fair competition. Take a moment to verify an MCP before every transfer—it helps keep California's towing industry safe, professional, and accountable.

We appreciate our tow companies and the hard, unappreciated work that goes into towing, most are usually left with someone’s mistreated vehicle and left with the expenses of insurance, diesel and the operator’s commission, which usually ends in a loss or break even situation. We should all consider slowing down and being mindful of the vehicles around us. Tow men’s life’s matter!

🚛 WHO PAYS FOR THIS CLEAN UP? 🚛

One of the biggest misconceptions about the towing and recovery industry is that the “government” pays towing companies to respond to crashes and clean up accident scenes.

The truth is: THEY DON’T

Most towing and recovery companies are placed on a rotation list and are called when law enforcement needs assistance. Being on that list does not come with a paycheck from the State, county, or local government; just means you have an opportunity to work, when they call you.

If the party or parties involved don’t know who they want to help them, then law enforcement will go to the rotation list to get a company to “clean up the mess” and take cake of the recovery and haul it off the roadway and preform remediation.

When a serious crash occurs, towing and recovery professionals often invest thousands of dollars in labor, equipment, environmental cleanup, traffic control, and specialized recovery resources to clear the roadway and help restore safe travel for the public.

Payment is typically dependent on the vehicle owner, their insurance company, or the company involved. Unfortunately, many vehicles are uninsured, underinsured, or owned by companies that will never pay the bill and abandoned them with the tower.

In many cases, recovery companies are forced take legal matter such as law suits or to wait through the legal abandonment process and then attempt to recover a small portion of their costs by selling the vehicle or remaining debris for scrap. Often, that amount doesn’t come close to covering a fraction of the actual expense of the recovery operation.

The next time you pass a crash scene that has been cleared and traffic is moving again, remember that a towing and recovery company likely invested significant time, manpower, and resources to make that happen—without any guarantee they will ever be paid.

Alabama’s towing and recovery professionals don’t do it because it’s easy. They do it because someone has to answer the call.
