The white supremacists who marched in Danbury this weekend brought a message of hate that is vile, dangerous, and wholly unacceptable in Connecticut, and in the U.S. A banner declaring “Keep New England White” is not ambiguous — it is an explicit expression of racism and exclusion, intended to intimidate our neighbors and normalize an ideology that has inflicted profound harm. We must be clear-eyed about the threat: groups that promote white supremacy do not simply seek attention; they seek to translate hatred into influence, policy, and power in our communities.
The First Amendment may guarantee their right to tell us exactly what they are, but we have the same right to tell them that what they are is dangerous and hateful.
Danbury, our neighbor, is one of the most diverse communities in the country, and it is stronger, more vibrant, and more beautiful because of that diversity. Our response must be solidarity — with Black, Brown, immigrant, Jewish, Muslim, LGBTQ+ and all targeted residents — and an unwavering commitment to a Connecticut where every person can live safely, belong fully, and participate equally in public life.
Hate has no home in Danbury, and it has no home anywhere in our state.
