⚠️ Protect the People Who Collect Your Trash

This video from the City of Milwaukee captures a frightening moment when improperly discarded oxygen tanks exploded inside a garbage truck.

Items under pressure can become extremely dangerous during collection. Please keep oxygen tanks and other pressurized cylinders out of your trash and recycling. Proper disposal protects our crews, equipment, and community.

☎️❓ Not sure how to dispose of oxygen tanks or other pressurized cylinders in Ridgewood? Contact the Ridgewood Recycling Division before disposing of them, and we'll help you find the proper disposal method. (201) 670-3373

Following a Recent Worker Injury: Sharps Disposal Reminder

As the use of injectable medications continues to rise, so does the importance of proper syringe and sharps disposal.

Loose needles should never be placed in household trash or recycling bins. Improper disposal creates a serious safety hazard for sanitation workers, and Village employees have been injured by discarded needles while handling trash.

The good news is that proper disposal is simple.

* Place used syringes, needles and other sharps into a puncture-resistant sharps container or a heavy-duty plastic household container with a tight-fitting lid, such as an empty laundry detergent bottle.

* When the container is three-quarters full, securely seal the lid with duct tape, label it "Do Not Recycle - Contains Sharps," and place the container in your household trash. Never in your recycling bin.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Village employees safe.

Ridgewood Spotlighted at NJ Sustainability Summit

Village of Ridgewood was proudly represented at the 2026 NJ Sustainability Summit on Friday, May 15, where our Municipal Recycling Coordinator, Sean Hamlin, participated as a panel speaker during “Food Waste Management: New State Requirements & Local Program Spotlights.”

The discussion reviewed recent legislation and highlighted innovative local programs. We’re honored that Ridgewood’s efforts were recognized as part of this statewide conversation and proud to see our community spotlighted as a leader in sustainability.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support and participate in our food scrap recycling initiatives — together, we’re making a difference! 🌎♻️

We’re on a roll, Ridgewood! 🛏️♻️

In 2025, we launched our mattress recycling program and successfully diverted 1.79 tons of waste—saving 40 mattresses from the landfill.

But wait until you hear this: In just the first four months of 2026, we’ve already doubled that total! 🙌

That is a massive win for our community and our planet. 🌎 Every mattress recycled is more space in our landfills and more materials recovered for a second life.

Thank you for making this program a runaway success! Got an old mattress taking up space? Don't toss it—recycle it responsibly with us.

To participate, residents should:
• Be prepared to show ID, 🆔
• Bag each mattress/box spring (required) 🪳
•Deliver each mattress/box spring to the recycling center 🛻
• See the attendant on duty for assistance and follow the attendant’s instructions👷
