This past Friday, the Village of Ridgewood and Ridgewood Water welcomed New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) Commissioners Joseph Coviello and Emma Rebhorn for the Drinking Water Coalition of New Jersey’s Breakfast Briefing.

Ridgewood Mayor Paul Vagianos was in attendance along with elected officials from the municipalities served by Ridgewood Water, legislative staff from District 40, and utility leaders from across the state, including Brick, Essex Fells, Livingston, Newark and New Brunswick.

The key focus of the discussion was water utilities’ interest in collaborating with the BPU on state-mandated notices and build initiatives and incentive programs around water conservation. With summer months expected to place increased demand on water resources, from 5 million gallons a day to 15 million gallons a day, largely associated with watering lawns and other non-drinking water uses of treated water, officials emphasized the need for consistent and effective communication to residents throughout the state.

The commissioners agreed that supporting municipal utilities’ efforts and customer education on conservation are critical to protecting water resources and promoting responsible usage.

The briefing concluded with a tour of the Carr PFAS Treatment Facility led by Ridgewood Water Director Richard Calbi Jr., providing attendees with an opportunity to learn more about the infrastructure and operations that support water service throughout the region.

The odds for a record-breaking "Super El Niño" in 2026 are rising significantly, according to recent reports. A super El Niño can dramatically amplify weather volatility, creating drought risks depending on the region. The concern is not simply “more rain” or “less rain,” but more extreme and less predictable weather and water conditions.

For the northeastern United States, that could mean more rapid changes in source-water conditions, and the continued need to manage peak summer water demand despite periods of rainfall. These increasingly variable climate patterns underscore the growing importance of resilient infrastructure, proactive planning, and responsible water management to help maintain a safe and reliable water supply.

Ridgewood Water will begin startup operations for the West Glen Booster Station tomorrow. This facility is designed to improve water pressure to higher elevations near the Glen Tank during periods of high water demand.

Tomorrow’s startup will operate at a very low flow rate, collecting operational data in preparation for a full flow test in June.

Two granular activated carbon vessels were recently delivered to the Main PFAS Treatment Facility in Glen Rock. When fully operational by the end of 2026, this facility will have the capacity to treat up to 360,000 gallons of water per day.

By year-end, 11 of Ridgewood Water’s 12 PFAS Treatment Facilities are scheduled to be online, reducing all regulated PFAS compounds in treated water to undetectable levels, surpassing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard of 4 parts per trillion.

The final facility is expected to be operational in April 2027. Once complete, this $150 million systemwide project will bring Ridgewood Water into full compliance four years ahead of the EPA’s 2031 deadline.

Spring construction and road work projects are in full swing! As crews work throughout our service area, we would like to remind residents that only Ridgewood Water and local fire departments are authorized to operate fire hydrants unless a permit has been issued by Ridgewood Water.

Unauthorized hydrant use (by a contractor or utility, for example) can cause discolored water and may even create a risk of cross-contamination within the distribution system.

If you witness a hydrant “robbery” taking place, please report it immediately to Ridgewood Water Customer Service at 201-670-5520 or [email protected].
