The outdoors are full of nostalgia. Trips past, hiking buddies of old, our favorite pieces of long-abused gear. Inevitably, time spent outside encourages us to reminisce about the time we spent outside long ago. Issue 14 is a celebration of that.

In the last 15 years, Congress has only granted wilderness designation—the highest level of protection our public lands can receive—to roughly 1.25 million acres. That might sound like a lot, but in the grant scheme of things and when compared to decades prior, it's a drop in the bucket. Wilderness designation has fallen off a cliff, thanks in large part to the political polarization impacting American government writ-large. But maybe there's another way? In Issue 14, journalist Jason Dove Mark examined why wilderness went from an easy bi-partisan rallying point to just another political impossibility, and how we might change that.

It's here! 1️⃣4️⃣🎉

Our 14th issue is a look back through our memories and a celebration of the places we've been.

Stories—like a reflective essay remembering a classic piece of gear and a writer's return to hike the longest trail in her tiny home state—celebrate nostalgia. It begins on the front cover—our first cover shot on film. Taken by Stephanie Blenderman, it's a wistful look at an Eastern Sierra backpacking trip. This issue's stories include an examination of the decline in congressional wilderness designations, the story of a dual-species paddling trip in Washington, the history of the venerable adventure skirt, reporting on just how far the outdoor community is willing to go to support Indigenous rights, plus all the recipes, trip reports, maps, and more than you expect from Trails Magazine.
