Here’s what’s coming up this week at Ridgway Public Library!

Our big event of the week is our Summer Concert in the Garden on Thursday, August 20th at 6:00 PM. We’re really excited to host live music from Rita Ordiway, Dr. Paul Fehrenbach, and Ed Schwer out in the garden. Plus, The Brew Bank Brewing Co. will be on-site with food and beverages available for purchase. Grab a lawn chair, bring a friend, and come kick back with us for a great evening.

Here’s the rest of our schedule for Tuesday, August 18th:
◦2:30 PM – Dickinson Teen Group: We're getting a little crafty (and messy) and spray painting beach towels this week.
◦3:30 PM – D&D Club: We have room for 1 or 2 more experienced teen players (ages 12–18). If you'd like to join the campaign, shoot Tia an email at [email protected] to grab a spot.
◦6:00 PM – Difficult Book Club: Meeting in the Conservatory for our "Adaptation" film screening!

A quick reminder for our Fall Book Clubs: If you’re signed up for Constant Reader or Wednesday Night Book Club, don't forget to stop by or give us a call so you can pick up your first book.

Have a great week, and we hope to see you in the garden on Thursday!

Oops! Turns out “Charlotte” is actually a “Charlie” and he flashed his wings for us many times to make sure we corrected our earlier error. 😂🥲

We released Charlie and Emily this afternoon in the RPL gardens. Two other library monarchs were there to welcome them, as well as many bumble bees. If the forecast holds, everyone should have many hours to stretch their wings and test their flight before the evening rain comes. 🦋🐝

This morning we welcomed two beautiful female monarchs in the RPL enclosure. Right on schedule, both females eclosed around sunrise, giving them plenty of quiet morning hours to pump fluid into their wings and dry before their first flight.

We've named them Charlotte and Emily, in honor of the Bronte sisters, assuming an Anne may still be in her chrysalis, waiting to emerge.

We wait to name our monarchs until they are butterflies, as it's easier to spot their gender once they have wings. Check out the handy infographic for more information on how to spot the difference!

We have four more chrysalises, all of whom will hopefully emerge healthy in the next 1-2 weeks. 🤞🦋

UPDATE: This program is now full! Keep an eye on the big screen behind the Circ Desk to jump the line on event sign-ups -- we feature upcoming programs there one full business day before posting them online to give our in-person patrons first dibs!

It’s no secret that the RPL gardens are home to fairies -- our library kids have known that for years. But every proper garden fairy needs a proper front door. ✨🚪🍄

We’re hosting a free Kids Clay Workshop where kids in grades 2–6 can craft their own ceramic fairy door with artist Lindsey Pauline, BFA!

A quick heads-up for parents: this isn’t air-dry clay! Kids will be working with real ceramic clay, so please dress them in clothes that can handle a mess. Once the doors are sculpted, Lindsey will take them to her studio to fire them in her kiln. We’ll notify everyone as soon as they're out of the kiln and ready for pickup at the library!

A huge thank-you to CNB Bank, Ridgway, for sponsoring this workshop and keeping it completely FREE for our families.

Space is VERY limited, so be sure to reserve your child's spot early at the link below.

The Donna Brazinski Memorial Garden is the perfect spot for three of our newest friends. 🦋

Don’t see the butterfly enclosure downstairs? Don’t panic! Now that our caterpillars have pupated, we have moved the enclosure and the remaining hanging chrysalises to our screened in porch.

DID YOU KNOW: Monarch chrysalises develop faster in warmth and tend to emerge into adulthood in daylight, cued by their own internal clock? Moving our developing friends to a hybrid indoor/outdoor space gives them natural temperature swings and light cycles that mimic the wild — plus some protection from predators and the elements. 🌞

Mark your calendars! We’re hosting a Fall Festival here at the library on Saturday, September 26th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, in collaboration with the Ridgway-Elk County Chamber Of Commerce's Flavors of Fall Festival happening the same day. 🍁

We’ll have plenty of good stuff going on at the library, including:
◦Baked goods, pulled pork sandwiches, and local honey for sale
◦A micro book sale
◦RPL branded apparel and tote bags

All proceeds go right back to supporting the library. Just a quick heads up that sales are cash or personal check only.

It’s going to be a fun day in town -- hope to see you there!

It was *another* beautiful evening to play with clay in our garden Conservatory! 🏛️🌱

A big thank you to artist Lindsey Pauline for leading us through the workshop to make the clay wallflower pockets, to our 14 participants for coming to get creative with us, and to CNB Bank Ridgway for sponsoring this event!

While Summer Reading has been underway, our youngest readers have all been chipping away at another of our reading challenges -- our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge! 5-year-old Legacy finished his this summer, just in time to enter kindergarten this fall. Congratulations Acy! We're proud of you!

This program was made possible by a grant from the Harrison and Muriel Dauer Stackpole Fund (at Elk County Community Foundation). Thank you for supporting the Ridgway Public Library's mission to offer free, educational services to local families!

We had an absolutely enchanting evening in our garden Conservatory rescuing grocery store orchids and discussing Susan Orlean's classic "The Orchid Thief" during our Difficult Book Book Club! 💚

This week we covered orchid repotting and Orlean's book. Next week we'll screen 2002's "Adaptation," an Oscar-winning film about one writer's attempt to create a film adaptation of the novel. If our participants haven't heard of the concept of 'meta-narrative' yet, they will!

Even past their peak bloom, the orchids looked stunning under the café lights in the twilight. Book clubbers, share photos of your rescued plants in the comments!
