Update: This program is full! Registrants, check your email for additional information. 🧡

The link is officially live for Orchidelirium: A Difficult (Plant) Book Club featuring The Orchid Thief. Space is very limited in this two-part 21+ experience inside the Ridgway Public Library Conservatory.

🔸Session I — Tuesday, August 11 @ 5:00 PM
Turn a basic orchid into a houseplant showstopper with a hands-on repotting workshop, followed by a deep dive into Susan Orlean’s intoxicating book and the mad, obsessive history of Victorian orchid hunters.
🔸Session II — Tuesday, August 18 @ Sunset
We screen Charlie Kaufman’s "Adaptation" alongside a themed signature cocktail. Widely considered a cinematic masterpiece and a brilliant, Oscar-winning companion to the text, the film beautifully mirrors the chaotic mania of the orchid trade itself. Be forewarned: it is a delightfully unhinged, R-rated ride complete with plenty of adult content, vulgar language, and Hollywood obsession.

Survive the book, the planting, and the film --then your live orchid goes to its forever-home with you. 🧡

🎟️ Seats are incredibly limited. Grab your spot before it's gone!: https://forms.gle/5rTyvz5CM15HcESBA

The sun is out, the air is hot, and there is a brand NEW story in the RPL StoryWalk for your family to enjoy!

“Snail Crossing” by Corey R. Tabor tells the story of a snail who sets out to cross the road to get to a fresh head of cabbage. 🥬 It’s a story of determination, friendship, *and* the maxim that “little by little one travels far.” ❤️🐌

The Ridgway Public Library StoryWalk was created in partnership with the Tricounty Rails to Trails Association and thanks to our sponsors: Elk County Council on the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Elk County Community Foundation.

In Victorian England, the obsession with orchids was so consuming it earned its own name: Orchidelirium. Collectors sent hunters into jungles to strip entire forests of rare specimens. Orchids died by the thousands in transit. Men went mad trying to grow them. The mania drove people to ruin — and they considered it worth it. 🀣

The Ridgway Public Library's conservatory was built in that same tradition. Modeled after the great conservatories of Victorian England, it was designed to bring the lush, impossible world of tropical plants into a place where people could gather, wonder, and lose themselves a little.

🧡 This August, we're leaning into that history.

Orchidelirium: A Difficult (Plant) Book Club featuring "The Orchid Thief" is two evenings in the Conservatory at the Ridgway Public Library. In Session I, you'll repot a live orchid — and learn how to turn a grocery store plant into a houseplant showstopper — before settling in for a discussion of Susan Orlean's intoxicating book and a deep dive into the Victorian mania that started it all. In Session II, we screen Charlie Kaufman's WEIRD 2002 film version of the text -- "Adaptation" -- with a signature cocktail. Survive the book, the planting, and the film -- then your orchid goes to its forever-home with you.

🔸Session I — Tuesday, August 11 at 5pm
Book Discussion · Orchid Repotting · A History of Orchidelirium
🔸Session II — Tuesday, August 18 at Sunset
Adaptation Screening · Signature Cocktail · Take Your Orchid Home

This program is completely free, but space in the Conservatory is exceptionally limited.

Registration opens Wednesday, June 10 at 8PM. 🧡
