Colorado River Fire Rescue was established as a Fire District on September 26, 2012 as a joint effort between Burning Mountains Fire Protection District and Rifle Fire Protection District to provide better service to our communities while avoiding additional costs. Colorado River Fire Rescue provides Fire, EMS, Hazardous Materials and Rescue response for the Town of N

ew Castle, the Town of Silt, the City of Rifle and surrounding areas with a total response area of approximately 851 square miles. Colorado River Fire Rescue is a combination Fire Department utilizing Volunteer, Part Time and Full Time staffing. The district maintains seven stations: four staffed stations, one station staffed through an ongoing partnership with Interagency Wildland Firefighters.

Passenger Train and Tanker Truck Collide between Rifle and Silt, Colorado.

At approximately 9:39 a.m. this morning, Colorado River Fire Rescue (CRFR) was dispatched to a reported collision involving a passenger train and a tanker truck between Silt and Rifle, Colorado.

CRFR responded with two engines, two ambulances, and a Battalion Chief. Upon arrival, crews found a passenger train involved in a collision with a tanker truck carrying hot asphalt tar. The collision resulted in the derailment of the train.

The driver of the tanker truck sustained minor to moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance for medical evaluation. No additional patients required transport.

CRFR personnel assisted approximately 310 passengers and train staff members from the train to waiting buses for transportation to their final destination.

Multiple agencies assisted with the incident response, including the Garfield County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Transportation, New Castle Police Department, and Union Pacific personnel.

The incident remains under investigation by the appropriate authorities.

At 9:38 am, emergency crews were paged to a train vs. tanker truck collision at a railroad crossing just east of Rifle on Highway 6&24.

Highway 6&24 is currently closed. Injuries are unknown at this time.

Please avoid the area and allow first responders to work safely. More details will be released as they become available.

Colorado River Fire Rescue and Glenwood Springs Fire Department responded for reports of a lightning strike near Canyon Creek around 12pm today. After determining the location of a tree fire, the incident was turned over to interagency crews and State sponsored air resources. We will continue to monitor and assist as needed.
This is a good reminder to be ready for wildfire season!

Smoke visible in South Canyon is from the lightning strike on 1 to 2 trees south of the train tracks. Fire crew are en route no need to call Dispatch.
