The Catoosa County Sheriff's Office is proud of its strong partnership with the Catoosa County School System in providing Basic Jailer and Basic Communications Officer certification courses through the Catoosa County College and Career Academy. This collaborative program prepares students for careers in public safety while meeting industry standards for professional training and development.

This year, the program achieved two significant honors: the prestigious LAPSEN Program of Excellence national certification and the Georgia Department of Education's Industry Certified Program "Stamp of Excellence." These recognitions reflect the program's commitment to excellence, innovation, and workforce readiness, as well as the dedication of the instructors, students, and community partners who contribute to its success.

The Catoosa County Sheriff's Office would like to congratulate the graduating seniors who successfully completed the Basic Jailer and Basic Communications Officer courses at the Catoosa County College & Career Academy. Upon successful completion of these courses, the State of Georgia issues these students certifications, allowing them to immediately enter the workforce as certified officers.

In 2022, the Catoosa County Sheriff's Office became the first agency in the nation to teach the Basic Jailer certification to high school students through the criminal justice pathway. When the new Catoosa County College & Career Academy opened, the program was transitioned to the academy. Due to the program’s continued success, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council authorized the Sheriff's Office and Career Academy to expand the program by adding the Basic Communications Officer certification course.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to recognize the importance of mental
wellness, reduce stigma, and remind our community that help is available.
At the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office, we understand that many calls for service involve
individuals and families facing mental health challenges. That’s why we are proud to have
Deputy Shelby Lewis serving as part of our co-response team, working alongside mental health
professionals from Bridge Health to provide compassionate support, crisis intervention, and
connections to care for those in need.
Deputy Lewis and our co-response team help bridge the gap between law enforcement and
mental health services by responding to calls where specialized assistance can make a
meaningful difference. Their work helps ensure individuals receive the support and resources
they need while promoting safety for everyone involved.
If you or someone you know needs help, resources are available right here in Catoosa County:
• Georgia Crisis & Access Line (GCAL): Call or text 988
• Volunteer Behavioral Health Care System
• Bridge Health
• National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Georgia
• Chattanooga Area Mental Health Resources
Mental health matters. Seeking help is a sign of strength, and no one has to face these challenges
alone.
