Ringwood Manor

Ringwood Manor Ringwood Manor is the summer mansion of 19th century ironmasters, the Cooper-Hewitt family. The house Hewitt and their families.
(243)

Ringwood Manor is a National Historic Landmark district, having historical importance spanning from Native Americans occupation through the early 20th century. The surrounding Ramapo Mountains' rich magnetite iron deposits allowed the area to become a major iron supplier and home to a succession of ironmasters from the colonial period through the early 20th century. During the Gilded Age, Ringwood

Manor became a large summer estate for partners Peter Cooper and Abram S. In 1938, the house, its contents, and the surrounding property were donated by the family to the State of New Jersey as a museum and a state park. With original historical structures, gardens, and landscapes on 582 acres and extensive historical collections illustrative of family life, community, industry and culture, Ringwood Manor is a unique repository of American history. Today, Ringwood Manor is a central part of Ringwood State Park and administered by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Parks and Forestry. The North Jersey Highlands Historical Society is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and an Officially Recognized Friends Organization for Ringwood Manor.

🌸 This first weekend in June kicks off the start of our Grounds & Gardens tours for the 2026 season!

Grounds & Gardens tours help to answer the question "what is all this stuff?" when walking around the property of Ringwood Manor. These informal guided tours last approximately 2 hours and discuss the history of the property, landscape design, outdoor historic objects, and other buildings on the estate of Ringwood Manor. Attendees will be shown historic images (like this one of Colonnade Row!) and have the opportunity to visit other historic structures on these tours.

Offered at 2pm every Saturday & Sunday from June 6th to October 25th, these tours are FREE* to attend! Just meet our knowledgeable guides at the cannon in front of Ringwood Manor, or jump on to the tour if you see a group walking by!

Attendees should wear sturdy shoes, and bring bug spray, sunblock, and water with them. Steady rain or high heat will cancel.

*Please note: grounds & garden tour is free, but there is a parking fee to enter Ringwood State Park during summer weekends: $5 per car for in-state residents, $7 per car for out-of-state residents

πŸ“š This Sunday, Mary 17th, celebrate the publication of archaeologist and author Ed Lenik & Nancy Gibbs's newest book: "Indians & Iron: A History of the Ramapough Munsee-Lenape of the Iron Complex at Ringwood & Hewitt, New Jersey."

This is the fifth book in a series exploring the evidence of the continuous presence of the Ramapough Munsee Lenape in New Jersey and New York.

Before European prospectors appeared in the Ramapo Mountains, the indigenous people here discovered magnetite iron ore. Showing colonial prospectors these deposits in the 1700s changed everything.

The authors examine the interplay between the iron industry and the people who showed prospectors the iron ore. The indigenous people were here before the rise of the iron industry and many remained employed in iron making and mining, living for generations in company housing, building a community that still exists.

The book is $25, but visitors who come to the book signing will be available to purchase on site for $20 (cash or check only).

Book signing takes place between 1pm and 4pm at the coffee shop located next to Ringwood Manor.

About the Authors:
Author and Archaeologist Edward J. Lenik digs into the records and the research, including his own work of more than 60 years. Here he brings together his early work on the iron industry and his landmark work on the continuous presence of Indigenous people, the Ramapough Munsee Lenape. Here in Ringwood where the Turtle Clan of the Ramapough remains, Ed has volunteered with the State Park Friends Groups for more than 60 years. Now he writes of what he has learned about Indians and Iron in this place. Ed has degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson in Business and New York University in Archaeology.

Nancy L. Gibbs is an artist, writer, poet, researcher, and historian who has worked with Ed Lenik for over 40 years. Her academic background in art and archaeology with a focus on tribal arts (B.F.A. Beloit College in Wisconsin and M.F.A. Michigan State University) provides counterpoint as she and Ed work and write together.

🌹 Happy Mother's Day! 🌹

Mrs. Sarah Amelia Hewitt was a mother to six children: Amy, Sarah, Peter, Eleanor, Edward, and Erskine Hewitt. Her son Edward dedicated his memoir to his mother, writing "To my mother, who loved Ringwood and built it into a home for the family and who always showed such wonderful love and understanding to all her children." β™₯

Here: an image of Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt, together with five of their six children, in a horse drawn carriage on the property of Ringwood Manor. From left to right the people are: Eleanor, Peter, Mr. Abram Hewitt, Amy, Edward, Mrs. Sarah Hewitt, and Sarah. Erskine Hewitt was not yet born (1871) when this image was taken.
