- Immaculate Conception Catholic Church has ties to Rio Grande City as early as the 19th century. A school was also attached to the church. Three nuns from San Antonio were given orders to teach in Rio Grande City in 1885. Into the 20th century, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament began their teaching, followed by the Sisters of Mercy. in 1920. The school is located across the church on Britton Ave in Rio Grande City.
