Juneteenth is observed on June 19 and marks the end of slavery in the United States. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. For many years, it was celebrated mainly in Black communities through gatherings, food, music, and reflection. In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, recognizing both the joy of freedom and the ongoing struggle for equality.
