Duty crews have been busy over the past week completing annual hose testing.

While it may look routine from the outside, hose testing is an important part of keeping our equipment ready for the next emergency. Every section of hose is stretched, inspected, tested, and documented to make sure it performs when our residents need it most.

This work takes time, coordination, and plenty of effort from our firefighters, all while crews remain in service and ready to respond to calls.

Strong work by the duty crews for getting it done and keeping Riverdale protected.

Today, while Engine 142 was out on an emergency call, we had the chance to meet one of our youngest fire fans.

He was excited to see the engine up close, try on a helmet, and spend a few minutes with our members. Moments like this are a reminder that our service extends beyond answering calls for service. It’s also about building relationships, connecting with our residents, and inspiring the next generation of possible future firefighters.

Thank you to our little buddy for making our day. The helmet looked great on you!

Today, members completed a ground ladder drill and equipment maintenance on E-142.

Crews worked on the basics that make a big difference on scene: carrying and positioning ladders, one- and two-firefighter ladder shifts, raising and lowering the 24’ extension ladder, roof access, and using a leg lock to safely work from a ladder. After training, the ladders were cleaned, inspected, washed, lubed, and placed back in service.

Ground ladders are one of the most basic tools in the fire service, but they are also one of the most important. Whether it’s rescue, ventilation, roof access, or firefighter safety, quick and confident ladder work matters.

Strong work by the crew today keeping the skills sharp and the equipment ready.

Yesterday, Gold Shift responded to a call for a kitten stuck in a sewer. By the time crews arrived, the homeowner had already safely gotten the kitten out. Our members checked the kitten over, provided the homeowner with basic kitten care guidelines, and advised them to get the kitten evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

We’re happy to report the homeowner decided to keep the little one and give it a safe home. Great outcome for this tiny survivor! 🐾🚒

Riverdale Firefighters Local 3580 had a great time visiting Patton School for Career Day!

Our members enjoyed spending time with the students, talking about what it means to be a firefighter, the importance of fire safety, and how we serve the Riverdale community every day.

The students had great questions, lots of energy, and plenty of smiles while learning about the fire service. We always appreciate the opportunity to connect with our local schools and help inspire the next generation.

Today, Riverdale firefighters responded to a fire alarm activation at one of our local schools.

We are happy to report that the school, staff, and students did an excellent job evacuating the building, following their emergency plan, and allowing crews to quickly investigate the alarm.

Situations like this are exactly why fire alarm drills are so important. Regular drills help students and staff know where to go, what to do, and how to remain calm when an alarm sounds. Whether it is a drill or a real emergency, every alarm should be taken seriously.

🚒 Riverdale Fire Department is now accepting applications for Firefighter/EMT-B! 🚒

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners for the Village of Riverdale, Illinois is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/EMT-B with the Riverdale Fire Department.

Immediate openings available.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications established by the Village of Riverdale, including:• U.S. citizen• Valid driver’s license• At least 21 years old by May 11, 2026 and under 35 years old at the time of testing and when the final eligibility list is posted, unless exempt by Illinois statute• High school diploma, GED, or high school proficiency statement• Valid Illinois EMT-B at time of hire• OSFM Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter certification at time of hire• Valid CPAT card with ladder climb certification at time of hire• Ability to meet all other hiring standards, including written exam, oral interview, background investigation, polygraph, medical exam, and drug screening

Important details:• Application deadline: Monday, May 11, 2026 at 4:00 PM CST• Applications must be submitted online only• $25 non-refundable application fee• Remote written exam testing runs from May 19, 2026 at 9:00 AM through May 21, 2026 at 4:00 PM
