Congratulations, Sgt. Eric Hollenstein, on Your Retirement!

The Riverdale Police Department would like to congratulate Sgt. Eric Hollenstein on his retirement and thank him for his years of dedicated service to the Riverdale community and the law enforcement profession.

Sgt. Hollenstein's law enforcement career began in Riverdale in 2005, when he was hired as a dispatcher. In 2006, he proudly served our country when he was deployed to Iraq with the United States Marine Corps.

After returning home, Sgt. Hollenstein attended the Morris County Police Academy in 2007, where he served as the academy class Vice President. In 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Throughout his career with the Riverdale Police Department, Sgt. Hollenstein served in numerous specialized roles, including:

• Rifle Instructor
• Red Dot Optic Instructor
• Active Shooter Instructor
• Field Training Officer
• PBA Local 335 President
• Morris County Prosecutors Office Narcotic Task Force Unit
• Fi****ms Instructor at the Morris County Police Academy

Sgt. Hollenstein's dedication to protecting and serving others has been recognized throughout his career. He is a 5 time recipient of the Life Saving Award, as well as a recipient of awards from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Morris County 200 Club.

Eric, thank you for your dedication, leadership, and commitment to the Riverdale community. Your years of service have made a lasting impact on our department and the people you served.

Honoring a Riverdale Community Member 🇺🇸

Today, Riverdale Mayor Paul Carelli, along with the Riverdale Police Department, honored retired Crossing Guard Frank Sorgi for his years of dedicated service to the Riverdale community.

In recognition of his commitment to keeping our children and residents safe, Federal Place has been officially named the "Frank Sorgi Crosswalk”.

As schools in the area begin to open, The Riverdale Police Department would like to remind the public to use extra caution when traveling on the roadways. Motorist are reminded to slow down, eliminate distractions and watch for pedestrians / bicyclists, especially the children walking to and from school. Also, obey traffic laws when traveling through neighborhoods and school zones.

Keep in mind that there will be increased traffic in area of the school during pick up and drop off times. Please allow yourself extra time and BE PATIENT for the crossing guard crossing pedestrians.

We hope that all the students and Riverdale School faculty have a great school year!

Letter of Appreciation / Life Saving
From Holmes Beach, FL Police Department

While on vacation in Florida in July, Chief Charles Quant witnessed an 11 year old girl who was drowning and completely unresponsive in water and immediately started CPR. Due to his life saving actions, the girl began breathing on her own.

Please join the Riverdale Police Department in welcoming Joanne Leser, Riverdale's newest Crossing Guard!

Joanne comes to us with many years of experience serving her community as an EMT with Ringwood Ambulance Corps and Atlantic Health Ambulance. After a rewarding career helping others, Joanne retired from EMS in 2024 and is now excited to serve the Riverdale community in her new role.

When Joanne isn't helping keep our children stay safe, she enjoys spending time with her family, especially her two daughters. She loves soaking up the sun by the pool, heading down to the Jersey Shore, and enjoying a cup of coffee with her family. Joanne also enjoys taking her two dogs, Buddy and Princess, for walks.

And when it comes to food, Joanne favorites are lasagna, pizza, and of course ice cream! "
We are excited to have Joanne as part of the Riverdale community and look forward to seeing her helping keep our students safe each day.

Starting today through September 7th, Riverdale Police Department will be joining in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.

During this time, Riverdale Police Department will have extra officers on shift that will be in high visibility, looking for motorists who may be under the influence or drugs and or alcohol.

Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal crashes. We aim to keep our roadways safe, deter impaired driving and encourage motorists to make responsible decisions.

Our goal is clear: to prevent accidents, injuries and death caused by drunk drivers.

Riverdale Police Department would like to thank Mayor Carelli and the Borough Council for the promotion of an officer and the presentation of awards from 2025.

Tonight at the Riverdale Council Meeting, Patrick Harden was promoted to the rank of Captain. Captain Harden will continue to oversee the Patrol Division and Telecommunications Desk as well as other administrative duties.

Chief Charles Quant presented awards to:

Officer Espinal received the Honorable Service Award for a motor vehicle stop in the early morning of January 19, 2025 that resulted in the arrest of the driver being intoxicated, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and the distribution of a controlled dangerous substance.

On March 21st, Sgt. Hollenstein, Sgt. Salvati, Ptl. Reilly, Ptl. Nordlander, Ptl. Reap were awarded the Life Saving Award. They were dispatched to a residence, finding an elderly male on the ground, not breathing and had no pulse. CPR was started and the patient was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

Ptl. Pollack received the Honorable Service Award after conducting a motor vehicle stop on September 13, 2025 where a loaded handgun with a chambered round was recovered as well as a controlled dangerous substance.

Sgt. Duffy received the Meritorious Award for assisting Pompton Lakes First Responders for a fully involved house fire on November 11, 2025. Members of the Pompton Lakes Police were injured from smoke inhalation where Sgt. Duffy transported the injured officers to a local hospital.

On December 26, 2025, Sgt. Salvati and Ptl.
Felano assisted Pompton Lakes First Responders for a fully involved house fire. Officers were informed that there was an unconscious victim inside the residence where they entered the home and removed them from further injuries. Sgt. Salvati and Ptl. Felano were awarded the Meritorious Service Award.
