General information

Created in 1927, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission embodies the vision of forward-looking community leaders who saw the need to plan for orderly development and protection of the natural resources in the two suburban counties bordering the District of Columbia. During the Commission's proud 90-plus years of existence, the population of the area it serves has increased to more than 1.9 million residents who inhabit a bi-county area of great economic, racial, ethnic and geographic diversity. The Commission's facilities, programs and responsibilities have constantly evolved and expanded to keep pace with the needs of this vibrant community. From assuming responsibility for the entire public recreation program in Prince George's County in 1970, to building and strengthening ongoing regional business partnerships, the Commission has continued to plan, fund and deliver quality, innovative programs, facilities and services. M-NCPPC benefits the citizens of Montgomery and Prince George's Counties by Turning Visions Into Reality.

Who We Are. What We Do. And Why...

About Us

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a bi-county agency empowered by the State of Maryland in 1927 to acquire, develop, maintain and administer a regional system of parks within Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, and to provide land use planning for the physical development of Prince George's and Montgomery counties. In addition, the agency gained responsibility for the public recreation program in Prince George's County in 1970.

Governing Body

The governing body of M-NCPPC consists of 10 members, 5 appointed by Montgomery County and 5 by Prince George's County. The Commission coordinates and acts on matters of interest to both counties, and meets at least once a month. The members of the Commission from each county serve as separate Planning Boards to facilitate, review and administer the matters affecting their respective counties.

Range of Duties

M-NCPPC administers a park system of more than 52,000 acres. It is composed of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and park-school recreation areas. Its staff of career employees includes planners, park and recreation administrators, park police and administration staff. In addition, seasonal workers staff numerous park and recreation programs.

Our Vision

Created in 1927, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) embodies the vision of forward-looking community leaders who saw the need to plan for orderly development and protection of the natural resources in the 2 suburban counties bordering the District of Columbia. During the agency's proud, 80 plus years of existence, the population of the area it serves has increased to approximately 2 million residents in a bi-county area of great economic, racial, ethnic and geographic diversity.

M-NCPPC's facilities, programs and responsibilities have constantly evolved and expanded to keep pace with the needs of this vibrant community. From assuming responsibility for the entire public recreation program in Prince George's County in the '70s, to building and strengthening ongoing regional business partnerships, M-NCPPC has continued to plan, fund and deliver quality, innovative programs, facilities and services for over three-quarters of a century. M-NCPPC benefits the citizens of Montgomery and Prince George's Counties by "Turning Visions into Reality."

Our Mission

Throughout 90-plus years of service, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) has endeavored to improve the quality of life for all of the citizens of the bi-county area it serves and of the communities in which these citizens live, work and raise their families. This mission is embodied in three major program areas which respond to the vision of our founders and are incorporated into our charter. M-NCPPC's mission is to:

  • Manage physical growth and plan communities.

  • Protect and steward natural, cultural and historic resources.

  • Provide leisure and recreational experiences.
  • Our Strategic Plan

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is many things to the people who live in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties. Some know us as professional planners who work to design and shape quality communities and neighborhoods, roads and transportation systems, services and facilities for today's residents and for future generations. Others picture us as the protector and preserver of more than 52,000 acres of parkland, trails and open space. Many see the agency as the provider of first-class recreational activities and facilities for citizens of all ages and ability levels. For others, still, M-NCPPC is talented, helpful staff members and thousands of dedicated volunteers. But no organization can function without a plan.

In order to achieve our Mission and best serve the citizens of the bi-county area, M-NCPPC will:

  • Continuously Improve Service Delivery

  • Focus on Mission-Driven Core Services

  • Incorporate Contemporary Technologies

  • Integrate a System of Performance Measurement

  • Maintain Management and Employee Accountability

  • Prioritize Our Capital Improvement Program

  • Provide Customer Focused Programs

  • Seek New Revenues and Sources of Funding
  • For Employment Opportunities at M-NCPPC:

Hello, why, OH WHY, would someone keep coming to pick up the trash, in a huge trash truck when facilities are CLOSED? Huntington Community Center receives a visit SEVERAL times a week from the BIG trash truck and there is no trash to pick up because - wait for it - the facility is CLOSED. Please save our tax dollars and pay that man who drives the truck to do something else. NO TRASH in Huntington, or I assume most other places too.
Please close all play grounds to help slow down COVID-19. The virus can live on plastic.
The Laurel-Beltsville Seniors Activity Center will be starting a new digital photography course on January 8, 2020. We have several slots still open. It will be held once a week, Wednesday, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. It is not a beginners course in that we aren't teaching you how to use your cell phone camera. You should have a basic knowledge of camera function and photography. The only real requirement is that you have a camera that can be set manually, to include shutter speed, aperture, focus, and ISO. A DSLR with interchangeable lens is even better. Even though it is held at the Senior Center you do not need to be a senior nor a member of the center. The course is open to anyone age 40 or above. There is a cost involved. As the instructor, I have been in photography since the mid-1960s, exclusively in digital for almost 20 years. I have taught muliple course at the Laurel Center. You can reach me by email ([email protected]) or my cell phone.

I do believe that Cottage city day was on august 7th 2019, The porta-johns were set up in the park the day before. They are still here. They are pad-locked, and cannot be used. would someone from MNCPPC please have the contracted company remove them. Thank you.

Dont have time to ride my elderly dog around searching for available public parks. Why cant the park be open for non criminal activity? Ive seen tires and trash and am aware why the gates get locked at night. However, why cant they get unlocked each morning? .
