There are some wildlife species living in Montgomery County you may not know.

Trail cameras and, unfortunately, animals recovered from roadways, have revealed one secretive species, the bobcat, that has begun to show itself in recent years.

Found mainly in western Maryland, the bobcat has been confirmed to be present in the county and even into Washington, DC!

The bobcat is a medium-sized feline which has a short tail with a black band near the tip and pointy tufts of dark hair at the tips with white patches on the backs of their ears.

The odds of spotting a bobcat in the wild in Montgomery County remain slim, due to low numbers and the fact that the bobcat is nocturnal and reclusive. However, the possibility is exciting and is real!

General information

Created in 1927, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission embodies the vision of forward-looking community leaders who saw the need to plan for orderly development and protection of the natural resources in the two suburban counties bordering the District of Columbia. During the Commission's proud 90-plus years of existence, the population of the area it serves has increased to more than 1.9 million residents who inhabit a bi-county area of great economic, racial, ethnic and geographic diversity. The Commission's facilities, programs and responsibilities have constantly evolved and expanded to keep pace with the needs of this vibrant community. From assuming responsibility for the entire public recreation program in Prince George's County in 1970, to building and strengthening ongoing regional business partnerships, the Commission has continued to plan, fund and deliver quality, innovative programs, facilities and services. M-NCPPC benefits the citizens of Montgomery and Prince George's Counties by Turning Visions Into Reality.

Who We Are. What We Do. And Why...

About Us

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a bi-county agency empowered by the State of Maryland in 1927 to acquire, develop, maintain and administer a regional system of parks within Montgomery and Prince George's Counties, and to provide land use planning for the physical development of Prince George's and Montgomery counties. In addition, the agency gained responsibility for the public recreation program in Prince George's County in 1970.

Governing Body

The governing body of M-NCPPC consists of 10 members, 5 appointed by Montgomery County and 5 by Prince George's County. The Commission coordinates and acts on matters of interest to both counties, and meets at least once a month. The members of the Commission from each county serve as separate Planning Boards to facilitate, review and administer the matters affecting their respective counties.

Good Afternoon! I have a question. Is there any consideration for any virtual classes? The senior members who attended the Chair Yoga/Stretching classes at the Westphalia Community Center benefited greatly from those classes. Might virtual (Zoom) classes be something that might be considered in the future, should the closure continue? Thank you.
Thanks for notifying the Board of Education. They cut the grass at the Calverton Elementary School, but I still got bitten walking through it by fleas or mosquitoes. They should have removed the grass hay, which is bedding for bugs. Anyway, it is done. If you could do be a favor, see if they can take the chains off the front and back gates at the school, so we can take walks using the school walk way. They should have given area walkers the code for the key lock, so we could Walk in safety. Now, I have to face bugs, people, and animals when I walk in the evening or morning, and I am walking alone on the side of the school, where it is easy to be mugged, or worse. Tell them to really consider it. We are not damaging property, just giving another avenue of safety while we have to walk. Thanks, and please open up all indoor pools real soon.
Hello There: Second request. Need to have grass cut at the Calverton Park, back side of school and the sides as well. Grass is taller than my last request last week. Had four ticks walking through the high grass to get to the other side of the park. Have respiratory problems, so must walk on flat surface, as best as possible. Hard to do when you have to walk up hill in the park, before you can walk flat. I got another tick on me yesterday, just sitting at the play area. Maybe you ought to do some spraying. They are really bad this year, along with mosquitos, bees, and biting fleas. I do not wish to hear about you having to bring this this up to the proper department. You know how grass grows when it rains. Your staff needs to keep up on this. Otherwise, why are you making everyone pay in the form of taxes, when you are not doing your job. I thank you in advance.
Hello, why, OH WHY, would someone keep coming to pick up the trash, in a huge trash truck when facilities are CLOSED? Huntington Community Center receives a visit SEVERAL times a week from the BIG trash truck and there is no trash to pick up because - wait for it - the facility is CLOSED. Please save our tax dollars and pay that man who drives the truck to do something else. NO TRASH in Huntington, or I assume most other places too.
Please close all play grounds to help slow down COVID-19. The virus can live on plastic.
The Laurel-Beltsville Seniors Activity Center will be starting a new digital photography course on January 8, 2020. We have several slots still open. It will be held once a week, Wednesday, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. It is not a beginners course in that we aren't teaching you how to use your cell phone camera. You should have a basic knowledge of camera function and photography. The only real requirement is that you have a camera that can be set manually, to include shutter speed, aperture, focus, and ISO. A DSLR with interchangeable lens is even better. Even though it is held at the Senior Center you do not need to be a senior nor a member of the center. The course is open to anyone age 40 or above. There is a cost involved. As the instructor, I have been in photography since the mid-1960s, exclusively in digital for almost 20 years. I have taught muliple course at the Laurel Center. You can reach me by email ([email protected]) or my cell phone.
Sharing this beautiful photo that was taken on the new hiker biker bridge on Cherry Hill Rd in College Park in Sepember 2019.
I do believe that Cottage city day was on august 7th 2019, The porta-johns were set up in the park the day before. They are still here. They are pad-locked, and cannot be used. would someone from MNCPPC please have the contracted company remove them. Thank you.
Well post
Apparently the message button is not working. Oncd again, Buck Lodge park has locked gates. Been like this since sunday morning. I have contacted mncppc about this before. Dont have time to ride my elderly dog around searching for available public parks. Why cant the park be open for non criminal activity? Ive seen tires and trash and am aware why the gates get locked at night. However, why cant they get unlocked each morning? .
