Riverhead CAP's Pre-Prom meetings at Riverhead High School for graduating seniors concluded this week. Students who plan to attend the senior prom are required to attend one of the meetings in order to purchase a prom ticket. Between the two meetings, 257 students and 257 parents attended the meetings at Riverhead High School. Riverhead Police Department officers, Sgt. James Welsh and Sgt. Guiseppe Rosini talked with students and parents about the legal consequences for underage drinking and drug use. Specifically, DWI, Zero Tolerance Laws, and Leandra's Law. The officers also addressed the Suffolk Social Host Law and the criminal and civil penalties for allowing underage drinking and substance use. Then sergeants reminded families that Riverhead Police Department does party patrols to enforce the social host law. Additionally, the officers emphasized that possessing fake ID is a felony and carries serious penalties.
Dr. Megan Slowey, Emergency Room Physician at Peconic Bay Medical Center - Northwell Health, addressed the health implications associated with underage drinking, ma*****na use, and Fentanyl. Dr. Slowey, Sgt. Welsh, and Sgt. Rosini emphasized the protections people have under the Good Samaritan Law and encouraged the students to call for help if they witness someone experiencing a medical emergency related to substance use.
With the financial support of Peconic Bay Medical Center - Northwell Health and Riverhead CAP, all students were provided a gift bag, and two free tickets were raffled off at each meeting.
