Tonight, our department responded to a reported structure fire in the Horizons industrial area. Upon arrival, crews discovered a box truck in flames. Prompt action was taken to extinguish the fire. Due to the nature of the incident reported to our dispatch, a mutual aid request was made to the North Kansas City Fire Department, Kansas City Fire Department,Southern Platte Fire Protection District for assistance. As smoke infiltrated into the warehouse due to the truck's proximity, a secondary request was made to KCFD to deploy their new large fan truck to aid in smoke removal. The fan truck efficiently eliminated the smoke, a task that would have otherwise taken several hours. It is reported to be the first operational deployment of this equipment. We extend our gratitude to KCFD.

Our crew knows that staying ready means taking advantage of every opportunity to train.

On Wednesday, with perfect weather on their side, A-Shift made the most of a vacant building in the area of NW Gateway Ave and NW Vivion Rd that is slated for demolition. A-Shift took to the roof for vertical ventilation drills, working chainsaws and axes in a real-world setting that no classroom can replicate.

This is the work that happens behind the scenes so we're always ready when you need us most. Great training makes for great service, and our community deserves nothing less.

Our crews just got a serious upgrade, and it means faster, safer rescues for our community.

Thanks to a 50/50 matching grant from Hero Fund USA, Inc., a local nonprofit that helps first responders afford critical safety equipment, we have purchased two new Z-rig rope systems.

These systems use mechanical advantage to reduce the effective weight of a rescue victim, making it faster and safer for crews to move and package patients during steep terrain rescues.

Given Riverside's extensive trail system and deep embankments throughout the city, this equipment will make a real difference when terrain and response time are critical.
